Chapter 8 - Safehouse Confessions

With the estate's location compromised by Marco’s betrayal, Dante moved them to a secure safehouse in the dense woods of Wisconsin—a fortress of glass and steel hidden miles from civilization.

That night, after Elena had fallen asleep in a fortified bedroom, Maria found Dante in the kitchen. He was sitting shirtless under the dim pendant lights, trying to stitch a deep laceration on his bicep where a piece of shrapnel had caught him during the ambush.

“Stop,” Maria said softly, walking over and taking the needle and thread from his clumsy, shaking hands. “You’re making a mess.”

Dante looked up at her. She had seen him kill today. She had seen the monster behind the tailored suits. Yet, her hands were steady as she began to stitch his wound.

“You shouldn't be near me, Maria,” Dante murmured, his voice thick with exhaustion and self-loathing. “I dragged you into a war. I am exactly what the world says I am.”

Maria tied off the knot, wiping away the blood with an antiseptic pad. She didn't pull away. Instead, her hands lingered on his bare skin, tracing the edge of an old scar on his chest.

“When I was starving, the ‘good’ people of the world walked past me,” Maria said, her voice fiercely steady. “The police ignored my husband’s gambling. The church offered prayers but no food. You are a violent man, Dante. But you are the only one who fed my daughter. You are the only one who stood in front of bullets for us.”

She stepped closer, the space between them disappearing entirely. Dante’s breath hitched. He looked down into her eyes, seeing not fear, but a profound, undeniable devotion.

“You are our monster,” she whispered, reaching up to cup his face.

Dante couldn't resist any longer. He closed the distance, crashing his lips against hers. It was a desperate, hungry kiss, fueled by the adrenaline of near-death and the undeniable truth that they had both found exactly what they needed in the darkest of places.
