Chapter 9 - The Trial and Sentencing

The trial was a media spectacle that completely shattered whatever remained of the Vance family's public reputation.

I sat in the front row of the gallery every single day, holding Elena's hand as the prosecution systematically dismantled my mother's entire life.

When Elena took the witness stand on the third day, the entire courtroom fell dead silent.

She wore a beautiful, tailored navy dress, her skin glowing and her posture straight, a stark contrast to the frail, terrified woman she had been months ago.

She calmly and bravely recounted the months of psychological torture, the starvation, and the terrifying physical weakness caused by the poisoned tea.

The jury was visibly horrified, several members wiping tears from their eyes as Elena described the fear of losing her baby to a fabricated CPS report.

When the prosecution played the hidden camera footage on the massive courtroom monitors, the trial effectively ended.

Patricia's defense attorney didn't even attempt a cross-examination; there was absolutely nothing left to defend.

Uncle Arthur and Aunt Susan both took the stand as prosecution witnesses, eagerly testifying about Patricia's lavish spending to save themselves from accessory charges.

Cousin Leo, who had already accepted a plea deal for the stolen watches, admitted on record that Patricia had paid him from my accounts to keep his mouth shut.

They threw each other to the wolves with breathtaking speed, proving exactly how toxic their entire dynamic had always been.

On the final day of the trial, the jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes before returning to the courtroom.

The foreman stood up, holding a piece of paper that held the fate of the woman who had tried to destroy my life.

"On the charge of attempted murder in the second degree, we find the defendant guilty," the foreman read clearly.

"On the charges of grand larceny, identity theft, and wire fraud, we find the defendant guilty."

"On the charge of child endangerment, we find the defendant guilty."

Patricia collapsed back into her chair, her face buried in her hands as she finally realized that her money, her lies, and her manipulation could not save her.

The judge, a stern man with zero tolerance for elder-abuse or child-endangerment cases, did not hold back during the sentencing phase.

"Patricia Vance, you are a predator who weaponized your position as a mother and grandmother to inflict unimaginable cruelty on a vulnerable family," the judge stated firmly.

"You stole their financial security, you endangered an infant's life, and you attempted to slowly murder your own daughter-in-law."

"I am sentencing you to twenty-five years in a maximum-security state penitentiary, without the possibility of early parole."

The sound of the judge's heavy wooden gavel echoing through the courtroom was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

The bailiffs hauled Patricia to her feet, placing heavy chains around her waist and wrists.

She turned to look at me one last time as they dragged her toward the side door, her eyes pleading for a mercy she did not deserve.

I didn't blink, I didn't scowl, and I didn't smile.

I simply turned away, wrapped my arm securely around Elena's waist, and walked my beautiful wife out of the courtroom.

The nightmare was officially over, and the rest of our lives was finally ready to begin.
