Chapter 6 - The Hidden Cameras

The CPS investigator slowly lowered her clipboard, her eyes still glued to the frozen image of my mother screaming at my fragile wife on the small phone screen.

"Mr. Vance, I need you to send that video file, along with your entire thirty-day cloud archive, to my official email address immediately," Ms. Walsh said, her voice shaking slightly.

"I am officially closing the investigation against your wife; these allegations are entirely baseless and maliciously filed."

Elena let out a massive, shuddering breath of relief, collapsing back into the hospital pillows as the tension finally left her exhausted body.

Detective Ramirez stepped forward, pulling a flash drive from her suit pocket and handing it to me.

"Mr. Vance, we need you to download every single piece of footage you have on that system," the detective instructed with fierce urgency.

"This isn't just evidence of false reporting; this is the smoking gun for premeditated attempted murder."

I sat in the uncomfortable hospital chair for the next two hours, painfully scrubbing through weeks of hidden camera footage on my laptop.

Every video clip I watched was a new, agonizing stab directly into my heart.

I saw my mother deliberately pouring Elena's freshly pumped breast milk down the kitchen sink while my wife was asleep.

I saw her eating lavish, expensive takeout meals while handing Elena nothing but plain dry toast and a glass of tap water.

I saw my cousin Leo walking into my home office in the middle of the night, using a crowbar to pry open my locked filing cabinet to steal my financial documents.

The most damning piece of footage, however, was from just three days ago.

The microphone on the living room camera picked up a clear, terrifying phone conversation between my mother and Aunt Susan.

"Don't worry, Susan, the boy is working himself to death, he doesn't notice a thing," my mother's voice echoed through my laptop speakers.

"Once I get this pathetic girl committed to a psych ward, I'll have full control of Marcus and his income again."

"I raised him to be successful, I deserve to enjoy the fruits of his labor, not some gold-digging incubator."

I slammed the laptop shut, physically sickened by the monster who had given birth to me.

She didn't just hate Elena; she viewed me as nothing more than a walking, breathing ATM machine designed to fund her opulent lifestyle.

I handed the loaded flash drive over to Detective Hayes, who looked equally disgusted by the snippets of audio he had overheard.

"We have everything we need to ensure she never sees the outside of a federal penitentiary," Hayes promised, securing the drive in an evidence bag.

"We are going back to the precinct to officially charge her, and we will be dispatching a team to round up your cousin Leo and any other relatives who participated in the theft."

I nodded, feeling a dark, cold sense of closure settling over my chaotic mind.

"Make sure they know exactly who handed over the evidence," I told the detectives, my voice devoid of any remaining familial affection.

"I want her to know that her own son is the one driving the final nail into her coffin."

As the detectives left the room, the night nurse walked in carrying Lily, who was finally awake, smiling, and completely fever-free.

I took my beautiful daughter into my arms, pressing a gentle kiss to her warm, soft cheek before placing her carefully on Elena's chest.

Watching my wife wrap her arms around our baby, crying tears of pure joy, I made a silent vow.

I would burn my entire extended family to the ground before I ever let anyone hurt the two of them again.
