Chapter 2 - The Truth Behind October

As the armored convoy sped down the Kennedy Expressway toward O’Hare International Airport, Roman watched the rain lash against the bulletproof glass.

His mind drifted unavoidably back to that chilly Tuesday evening in October when he had destroyed his own world with a single word.

The Sokolov Bratva had breached their inner circle that week, bribing a federal judge and two of Roman’s top security captains.

Mikhail Sokolov, a ruthless patriarch with nothing left to lose, had sent Roman a photograph that turned his blood to liquid nitrogen.

It was a picture of Sienna Croft laughing inside a small flower shop on Oak Street, taken through the crosshairs of a high-powered sniper rifle.

The message written on the back of the photograph had been simple, brutal, and entirely non-negotiable: We will peel her apart in front of you until you sign over the port authority rights.

Roman knew that keeping her inside the Gold Coast penthouse would only turn the building into a fortified slaughterhouse.

He knew that if he explained the danger to her, Sienna’s stubborn, fearless heart would have made her stay and fight beside him.

She would have refused to run, she would have tried to bear the weight of his underworld sins, and it would have gotten her killed.

So he had chosen the only path that guaranteed her absolute survival, even if it meant ripping out his own soul in the process.

He had waited until she returned to the penthouse that evening, her cheeks pink from the autumn wind, her smile radiant and unguarded.

He had stood across the dimly lit study, channeling every ounce of cold, ancestral cruelty his father had ever taught him.

He had looked into the hazel eyes of the only woman who had ever made him feel human, and he had told her to leave.

He remembered the exact way her breath had hitched, the micro-second of confusion before her pride built an impenetrable wall around her heart.

She hadn't begged, she hadn't cried, and she hadn't given him the satisfaction of seeing her break beneath his cruelty.

She had simply picked up her coat and walked out into the Chicago night, leaving Roman alone in a multi-million-dollar tomb.

For eight months, he had systematically hunted down every single member of the Sokolov syndicate who had dared to threaten her existence.

He had burned their businesses to the ash, seized their territories, and buried Mikhail Sokolov beneath six feet of cold Illinois earth.

The blood was dry now, the enemies were gone, and the streets of his city were quiet under his undisputed rule.

Roman pulled his phone from his pocket, staring at the GPS coordinates Nikolai had forwarded to his encrypted screen.

He was finally free to explain the truth, but a dark, lingering terror whispered that eight months of silence might have permanently killed her love.
