Chapter 19 - The Reckoning

The suppressed crack of the pistol shot echoed through the concrete bunker with a flat, final sound that made the remaining three lieutenants jump in their seats.

Anton slumped forward onto the mahogany table, his forehead coming to rest against the Cayman Island transfer documents that had bought his treason.

A dark red pool of blood began to spread slowly across the polished wood, dripping over the edge and hitting the concrete floor with a rhythmic patter.

Roman did not look at the body; he lowered his weapon, decocking the hammer with his thumb before sliding it smoothly back into his holster.

He turned his attention to the three surviving captains, who were sitting completely rigid, their hands kept flat and visible on the table surface.

“Let this be the final lesson regarding what belongs to the Volkov name,” Roman said, his voice carrying the absolute authority of an undisputed king.

“The old ways of treating women as pawns, as liabilities, or as leverage in syndicate disputes ended the moment I pulled that trigger.”

He leaned over the table, his gray eyes fixing each man with a stare that burned through their individual ambitions and reminded them of their mortality.

“If anyone in this organization mentions Sienna Croft’s name without absolute respect, if anyone looks toward the Gold Coast with anything less than loyalty, I will not simply shoot you.”

His voice dropped to a low, terrifying whisper that echoed off the cold concrete walls of the underground vault.

“I will systematically dismantle your bloodlines, your businesses, and everything you have ever built until your names are entirely erased from this city.”

The three lieutenants bowed their heads simultaneously, their submissions absolute and unconditional in the face of his demonstrated brutality.

“We understand, Roman,” Viktor spoke for the group, his voice trembling slightly with relief that the execution had not extended to his own seat.

“The waterfront is secure, the Sokolov debts are cleared, and the family stands behind your house without reservation.”

“Good,” Roman said, turning his back on the table and walking toward the hydraulic elevator doors where Nikolai stood waiting.

“Clean up this mess, Viktor, and send the treasurer’s remaining accounts to the orphanage foundation on the South Side before morning.”

He stepped into the elevator cab, the mirrored doors closing over the sight of the blood-stained boardroom, sealing the old, violent chapter of his life forever.

As the lift rose toward the surface of the city, Nikolai looked at his boss, noticing that the rigid, ancestral tension in Roman’s shoulders had finally vanished.

The king had defended his realm, he had eliminated the vipers in his court, and for the first time in ten years, he was going home to live.
