Chapter 5 - The Siege of Bainbridge

At two-thirty in the morning, the automated perimeter defense systems of the Mercer estate did not sound a standard audible alarm; instead, the smart-glass windows across the entire ground floor instantly shifted from transparent to opaque ballistic steel-mesh lockdown mode with a deep, pneumatic hiss.
In the master guest suite, Clara bolted upright in bed. Before her feet even touched the hardwood floor, the heavy oak door swung open. Julian sat in his motorized chair in the doorway, dressed in a dark tactical sweater and trousers, his face a mask of absolute, glacial calm. Behind him stood two heavily armed security contractors wearing night-vision headsets.
"Get the boys," Julian ordered calmly. "We are moving to the secure lower level. Now."
"Julian, what's happening?" Clara asked, rushing to the twin beds and scooping up a sleepy, confused Milo while wrapping a blanket around Leo's shoulders.
"Andrei Volkov decided not to wait for morning," Julian replied, reversing his chair seamlessly into the hallway to cover their flank as they moved toward the private elevator. "They jammed our local cell towers ten minutes ago and breached the outer gate using a thermal breaching charge. Victor has twelve armed men engaging their assault squad in the lower driveway right now."
As the elevator doors closed, sealing them inside the reinforced steel shaft, a dull, heavy thud echoed through the foundation of the house—the unmistakable sound of a high-explosive grenade detonating somewhere on the north terrace.
Milo began to cry, burying his face in Clara's neck, while Leo’s eyes went wide with terror. "Mama! Loud boom!"
"It's just thunder, baby," Clara lied frantically, kissing both of their heads as her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "We're just playing a nighttime camping game with your father."
The elevator doors parted on the subterranean level—a state-of-the-art command bunker carved directly into the granite cliffside beneath the estate. It was equipped with independent generator power, medical bays, and a bank of monitors displaying live infrared feeds from fifty cameras mounted across the grounds.
Victor Thorne was already at the command console, blood dripping from a superficial shrapnel cut across his forehead, his hands moving rapidly over the tactical communications array.
"Status, Victor," Julian commanded, rolling his chair directly to the center of the console while Clara placed the trembling twins onto a leather sofa in the corner of the room.
"We neutralized their lead vehicle at the gate, sir," Victor reported, pointing to an infrared screen showing a burning SUV blocking the main driveway. "But they brought a specialized hit squad—at least sixteen men, professional ex-military mercenaries. They’ve bypassed the north lawn sensors and are attempting to breach the main terrace doors using linear cutting charges."
"They want to draw our interior guards out of the house into a crossfire," Julian analyzed instantly, his eyes scanning the thermal monitors with terrifying, high-speed calculation. "Who is leading the assault team?"
"We got a visual on the command vehicle idling by the tree line," Victor said, zooming in on a secondary camera feed.
Standing behind the open door of a armored Mercedes G-Wagon, illuminated by the tactical lights of his mercenaries, was a tall, heavily scarred man wearing a black trench coat. He was looking directly up at the security cameras, holding a heavy satellite radio in one hand.
"Andrei Volkov," Julian whispered, his steel-blue eyes hardening into twin drills of ice. He reached out and tapped the local broadcast intercom switch on the console—a system linked to the high-decibel warning speakers mounted across the exterior of the estate.

"Andrei," Julian’s voice boomed across the storm-swept grounds above, cutting through the gunfire and howling wind with chilling clarity. "You are trespassing on private property. Order your men to drop their weapons and surrender, or none of them will leave this island alive."
A moment of static hissed over the console before Andrei Volkov’s voice replied through the intercepted radio frequency, thick with a heavy, mocking Russian drawl. "Julian Mercer! The paralyzed king sitting in his concrete hole! You cost my family fifty million dollars at the Tacoma docks yesterday, Julian! Turn over the woman and the two little bastards she brought with her today, and I will let you burn in your wheelchair in peace! Refuse, and my men will bring this entire cliffside down into the ocean!"
