Chapter 13 - The Ballroom Checkmate

Zorin’s face contorted in sudden, violent fury. Forgetting the string quartet, the Swiss bankers, and the two hundred high-society guests surrounding them, the Russian lieutenant dropped his hand into his tailored tuxedo jacket, reaching for a concealed, suppressed Walther PPK pistol.

"You paralyzed piece of shit," Zorin snarled, stepping directly toward Julian’s chair. "I will blow your head off right here—"

Before Zorin’s hand could clear his lapel, Julian’s right thumb hit the secondary trigger beneath his joystick console.

From the front footrest of Julian’s titanium chair, a concealed, highly focused pneumatic stun charge discharged with a muffled thwip. A directional blast of compressed kinetic gas and a 50,000-volt arc of localized electrical current struck Viktor Zorin directly in the center of his shin.

The Russian lieutenant gasped, his nervous system instantly overloading as his right leg buckled beneath him. He collapsed heavily onto the polished mahogany floor, his tuxedo jacket spilling open as his suppressed pistol skittered across the wood, spinning to a halt directly against the toe of Clara’s emerald evening slipper.

Clara didn't scream or step back. With absolute, practiced coolness, she placed her high-heeled shoe firmly over the weapon, obscuring it beneath the long silk hem of her gown just as Victor Thorne and his two tuxedo-clad security contractors materialized from the crowd like phantoms.

"Is there a medical emergency here?" Victor called out loudly, playing the concerned bystander to perfection as he and his men immediately knelt over the writhing, paralyzed Zorin, shielding the downed operative from the view of the curious ballroom guests.

"It appears Mr. Zorin has suffered a sudden neurological seizure," Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying calmly to the startled Swiss bankers and the approaching club maître d'. "Victor, please assist Mr. Zorin's associates in transporting him to our private medical launch at the marina dock. We would hate for him to receive substandard care."

"Right away, Mr. Mercer," Victor said grimly. Before Zorin could utter a single word of protest through his clenched, electrified jaw, Victor’s contractors hauled him smoothly to his feet, supporting his limp weight between them as though assisting a drunken friend, and marched him rapidly out the side service terrace toward the private harbor.

The entire tactical neutralization had taken less than fifteen seconds. The string quartet hadn't even missed a measure of Mozart.

Julian turned his motorized chair back toward the VIP bar, picking up two fresh flutes of vintage champagne from the counter. He handed one to Clara, whose eyes were shining with a brilliant, adrenaline-fueled triumph.

"You execute a very clean checkmate, Mr. Mercer," Clara murmured, clinking her crystal flute against his.

"I had an exceptional compliance auditor watching my blind spot, Mrs. Mercer," Julian smiled, sipping his champagne as he surveyed the ballroom. "Victor’s team will extract the secondary recall codes from Zorin’s encrypted phone on the launch before we cross the maritime border. Chen Liew’s strike team will be recalled to Macau before their plane even touches down in Seattle."

He reached out, his gloved hand catching hers, his thumb tracing the pulse at her wrist—steady, calm, and completely fearless. "Our island is secure again, Clara. Let's go home to our sons."
