Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

The gala wasn't just a show of force; it was a distraction.

While dancing a slow waltz with Dante, Clara noticed his second-in-command, a man named Silvio, quietly slipping a keycard to one of Victor Marzano’s lieutenants near the terrace. Silvio was the rat. He was giving them access to Dante’s secure shipping ports.

"Dante," Clara whispered in his ear, pressing her body flush against his so no one would see them talking. "Silvio. Ten o'clock. He just handed over a cipher key."

Dante’s eyes flicked to the terrace. His expression didn't change, but Clara felt the lethal intent radiate off his body.

"Get Leo," Dante ordered softly. "Go to the armored car. Do not wait for me."

Clara grabbed the baby from the private suite upstairs and made it to the underground garage just as gunfire erupted in the ballroom above. She threw herself into the backseat of the bulletproof SUV, clutching Leo to her chest.

Ten minutes later, the door ripped open. Dante slid in, breathing heavily, blood splattered across his crisp white shirt. He looked at Clara, his eyes wild and dark.

"Silvio?" she asked.

"Handled," Dante growled, pulling her and the baby into his arms, burying his face in Clara’s neck. "You saved my empire tonight, Clara. You saved my life."
