Chapter 14

"Silas, look!" Lily announced proudly.
Silas turned, lowering his glass as the six-year-old girl ran up to him.
She was holding a massive, brand-new box of one hundred and twenty premium colored pencils.
"Victor bought them for me," Lily said, her eyes shining with pure joy.
"He said they are apology pencils."
Silas glanced over Lily’s head and saw Victor standing in the doorway, looking highly uncomfortable but secretly pleased.
"It seems my enforcer is going soft," Silas noted dryly.
"I just didn't want to get yelled at again, Boss," Victor mumbled, scratching the back of his neck before leaving the room.
Nora walked in a moment later, holding a steaming mug of tea, her face bright and rested.
The dark circles under her eyes had completely vanished, replaced by a confident, peaceful glow.
She walked up beside Silas, looking out at the falling snow covering the gray city.
"She’s drawing a picture of the tunnel," Nora mentioned softly, leaning slightly against his arm.
"She drew you as a giant bat."
Silas chuckled quietly, taking a sip of his bourbon.
"Accurate," he admitted.
They stood together in comfortable silence, watching the winter storm blanket the world below them.
The monster of the Midwest had spent eight years building an empire out of pure, unadulterated darkness.
He had thought that the light was completely gone from his life, buried on a bridge long ago.
But as he looked down at the little girl coloring on his million-dollar glass desk, he realized he was wrong.

The light hadn't been extinguished.
It had just been waiting for him in a run-down diner at three in the morning.
