Chapter 2
CHAPTER 2: THE MAID'S SECRET IDENTITY
The ballroom felt frozen in time.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Hundreds of eyes remained fixed on Sarah.
Or rather...
The woman they thought was Sarah.
Emily's words echoed through the silent hall.
"Her real name isn't Sarah."
The accusation hung in the air like a storm cloud.
Daniel slowly turned toward the maid.
His heart pounded harder than ever.
Minutes ago, he had seen her as the woman who saved his life.
Now questions flooded his mind.
Who was she?
Why was she here?
And why did Emily seem so terrified of her?
Sarah's hands trembled slightly.
For the first time all night, she looked vulnerable.
Daniel stepped closer.
"What is she talking about?"
Sarah swallowed hard.
She didn't answer immediately.
The hesitation only made the guests more anxious.
Whispers spread through the crowd.
"Who is she?"
"Did she fake everything?"
"Was this planned?"
"What's happening?"
Emily suddenly laughed.
A sharp, bitter laugh.
"Tell them."
Sarah closed her eyes.
For a brief moment she seemed exhausted.
As if she had been carrying a burden for years.
Then she looked directly at Daniel.
Tears filled her eyes.
"My name isn't Sarah."
The ballroom erupted.
People gasped.
Phones rose higher.
Everyone wanted to hear every word.
Daniel stared at her.
His expression unreadable.
"What is your name?"
The woman took a shaky breath.
"My name is Sophia."
Silence followed.
Nobody recognized the name.
Except one person.
Daniel's mother.
The elegant woman standing near the front suddenly staggered backward.
Her face turned ghost white.
The glass in her hand slipped.
CRASH.
It shattered on the floor.
Everyone turned toward her.
Her lips trembled.
"No..."
Daniel frowned.
"Mom?"
She stared at Sophia as if she had seen a ghost.
"No... that's impossible."
Sophia looked away.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Daniel felt confusion growing stronger.
"What is going on?"
His mother slowly stepped forward.
Her entire body shaking.
Then she whispered something nobody expected.
"Sophia died eighteen years ago."
The ballroom exploded.
Guests looked at one another in disbelief.
Daniel's pulse thundered in his ears.
"What?"
His mother covered her mouth.
Her eyes never left Sophia.
"I saw her funeral."
A chill swept through the room.
Sophia lowered her head.
Daniel felt as though reality itself had become unstable.
Nothing made sense anymore.
A dead girl.
A fake identity.
A poisoned drink.
A cheating fiancée.
What was happening?
Finally Sophia spoke.
"I didn't die."
The room fell silent again.
Her voice cracked.
"They only wanted everyone to think I did."
Daniel stared at her.
"What are you talking about?"
Sophia wiped her tears.
Then she revealed a truth buried for nearly two decades.
"Eighteen years ago, my father worked for your family."
Daniel frowned.
His mother looked horrified.
Sophia continued.
"He was your father's financial advisor."
The guests listened carefully.
Nobody dared interrupt.
"My father discovered something."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"What?"
Sophia looked directly at his mother.
Then at the portrait of Daniel's late father displayed near the wedding stage.
"A theft."
The ballroom gasped.
Sophia's voice grew stronger.
"Millions of dollars disappeared from company accounts."
Daniel's eyes widened.
His father had built one of the largest business empires in the city.
The idea seemed impossible.
Sophia continued.
"My father collected evidence."
The room remained completely silent.
"He planned to expose the people responsible."
Daniel felt a strange sense of dread.
"Then what happened?"
Sophia's eyes filled with pain.
"He died."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Sophia lowered her gaze.
"They said it was an accident."
The ballroom suddenly felt much colder.
Daniel's mother looked ready to collapse.
Sophia clenched her fists.
"But it wasn't."
The guests erupted with shocked whispers.
Daniel stared at her.
"Are you saying someone murdered him?"
Sophia nodded slowly.
"Yes."
The silence that followed felt endless.
Daniel's heartbeat pounded in his ears.
His entire life had been built upon stories.
Stories about his family.
Stories about his father.
Stories about success.
Now every one of those stories seemed uncertain.
Then Emily suddenly interrupted.
"Oh please."
Everyone turned.
She folded her arms.
Her expression full of contempt.
"You expect people to believe this?"
Sophia looked at her calmly.
Emily stepped forward.
"If your story is true, where's your proof?"
The question lingered.
Sophia remained silent.
For a moment it appeared Emily had won.
Then Sophia reached inside her handbag.
And removed a small metal flash drive.
The room gasped.
Emily's confidence instantly disappeared.
Sophia raised the drive.
"My father left this behind."
Daniel stared at it.
His pulse quickened.
Sophia continued.
"He hid copies of everything."
The ballroom became completely silent.
"Bank records."
She held up the drive.
"Transfers."
She raised it higher.
"Names."
The guests exchanged nervous looks.
Then she said two words that changed everything.
"And murders."
Several people gasped aloud.
Daniel felt sick.
His mother nearly fainted.
Emily's face lost all color.
Michael looked terrified.
Sophia noticed.
And so did Daniel.
A terrible realization began forming inside him.
Sophia slowly turned toward Michael.
Then spoke.
"You already know what's on this drive."
The room exploded.
Michael jumped to his feet.
"That's insane."
But his voice lacked confidence.
Sophia took a step closer.
"Really?"
Michael backed away.
Daniel watched carefully.
For the first time in years...
His best friend looked afraid.
Very afraid.
Sophia's voice hardened.
"Tell them why you've been trying to find this drive."
The crowd immediately focused on Michael.
Sweat appeared on his forehead.
"I don't know what she's talking about."
Nobody believed him.
Not anymore.
Sophia looked toward Daniel.
"There is something you need to know."
Daniel's stomach twisted.
"What?"
Sophia hesitated.
As if she hated what she was about to reveal.
Then she finally said it.
"Emily wasn't the mastermind."
The ballroom froze.
Emily looked shocked.
Michael looked horrified.
Daniel felt his blood run cold.
Sophia pointed directly at Michael.
"He was."
The guests erupted into chaos.
Shouts filled the room.
Arguments broke out.
Phones recorded every second.
Michael suddenly snapped.
"Enough!"
Everyone fell silent.
His face twisted with rage.
The charming smile he always wore was gone.
The friendly mask disappeared.
For the first time...
People saw the real Michael.
And it was terrifying.
He looked at Sophia with pure hatred.
"You should have stayed dead."
The ballroom gasped.
Daniel's eyes widened.
Sophia's face turned pale.
Michael realized what he had just said.
Too late.
Far too late.
The silence became deafening.
Daniel slowly stepped backward.
His heart shattered.
Because only a guilty man would say those words.
Sophia stared at Michael.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"So it was you."
Michael's expression changed.
A terrible realization crossed his face.
He had revealed too much.
And everyone knew it.
Daniel felt his entire world collapsing around him.
But the nightmare wasn't over.
Not even close.
Because at that exact moment—
A security guard ran into the ballroom.
Breathless.
Panicked.
Terrified.
His voice echoed across the hall.
"Someone broke into the evidence room!"
The guests gasped.
Sophia froze.
The flash drive slipped slightly in her hand.
The guard pointed toward the parking lot.
"They were looking for that drive."
The ballroom exploded with fear.
Then another voice shouted from outside.
A voice nobody recognized.
A voice filled with rage.
"GET HER!"
Sophia's face went white.
Several windows shattered simultaneously.
CRASH!
Guests screamed.
Daniel instinctively grabbed Sophia's arm.
And for the first time that night...
He realized this wasn't just about betrayal anymore.
Someone was willing to kill to keep the truth hidden.
And they had just arrived.
To be continued...
