Chapter 7 - A Mother's Vengeance

The sickening crack of stone hitting bone echoed through the tunnel.
Anton roared in pain, dropping the flashlight as he stumbled forward.
The light rolled across the dirt floor, casting wild, spinning shadows.
He was dizzy, but he was a large, brutal man.
He spun around, swinging the silver carving knife blindly.
The razor-sharp blade sliced through the fabric of Sarah’s uniform, cutting her arm.
Sarah cried out, stumbling backward against the damp wall.
"You stupid maid!" Anton spat, wiping blood from his forehead.
He lunged at her, raising the knife for a fatal strike.
But Maya had not stayed put.
She had crept out from behind the barrels while they were fighting.
She still had the heavy brass fireplace poker clutched in her hands.
Just as Anton stepped forward, Maya swung the poker at the back of his knees.
The heavy brass connected with his joints with a hollow thud.
Anton’s legs buckled completely, and he crashed onto the dirt floor with a heavy grunt.
Sarah did not hesitate for a single second.
She kicked the carving knife out of his hand, sending it clattering into the darkness.
Then, she picked up the dropped tactical flashlight.
She gripped it by the heavy, metal base.
She struck Anton across the jaw with the metal cylinder, knocking him out cold.
The giant baker went limp, breathing heavily in the dirt.
Sarah dropped the light and fell to her knees, clutching her bleeding arm.
Maya rushed to her mother, her eyes wide with terror.
"Mom, you're bleeding!" Maya cried, pressing her hands against the wound.
"It's okay, sweetheart," Sarah gasped, pulling a piece of fabric from her torn apron to wrap the cut.
"It's just a scratch. We have to keep moving."

They left the unconscious assassin in the dark and hurried toward the exit.
They didn't look back.
