Chapter 6 - The Baker's Wrath

The footsteps above them were heavy, deliberate, and moving fast.
Sarah turned off the phone’s flashlight, plunging them into pitch blackness.
"Keep against the wall," Sarah breathed into Maya’s ear.
They moved blindly, feeling the cold, damp bricks with their free hands.
The pursuer turned on a powerful tactical flashlight.
The bright beam swept across the tunnel, casting long, monstrous shadows.
"I know you're down here, little rat!" a voice echoed through the catacombs.
It was Anton.
The baker who had signed for the cake, the man who had planted the bomb.
He was Julian’s inside man, and he was hunting the only witnesses.
"You ruined the biggest payday of my life," Anton snarled, his voice echoing off the curved ceiling.
Maya could see the beam of his light bouncing closer and closer.
Sarah pulled Maya behind a pile of rotting wooden wine barrels.
Anton descended the final few stairs, stepping into the main corridor.
In one hand, he held the tactical flashlight.
In the other hand, he held the missing silver carving blade from the velvet case.
The steel glinted wickedly in the beam of light.
"I'm going to cut you into little pieces and leave you for the rats," Anton promised, chuckling darkly.
Sarah squeezed Maya’s hand one last time.
She let go and reached down in the dark, her fingers searching the ground.
She found a heavy, loose brick.
"Stay down," Sarah mouthed silently.
Anton walked past their hiding spot, his flashlight pointing ahead.
He didn't check behind the barrels.
Sarah rose from the shadows like a terrifying avenger.
May you like
She raised the heavy stone high above her head.
With a scream of pure maternal rage, Sarah brought the brick down on Anton’s skull.
