Chapter 1 - The Whisper in the Dark

“There’s something else you need to know,” Sofia whispered, her voice carrying a weight that made Lorenzo’s chest tighten. She didn’t blink. “Your wife, Isabella. She’s the one who gave Julian the security codes. She’s waiting at the marina right now. Once Julian calls to say it’s done, she’s coming back to play the grieving widow for the police.”
Lorenzo’s breath hitched, a cold void opening in the center of his stomach. Isabella. His wife of fifteen years. The woman he had shielded from the brutal reality of his world, or so he thought. The betrayal of a nephew was a deep cut; the betrayal of a wife was a fatal blow to the soul.
He looked at Sofia, really looking at her for the first time in four years. The submissive posture of a housekeeper was entirely gone. Her shoulders were set, her breathing perfectly regulated. She unclipped a spare magazine from a hidden holster under her dress and pressed it into Lorenzo's palm.
"Who are you?" Lorenzo mouthed silently.
"The woman who's going to keep you alive tonight," she replied, her voice barely a vibration in the dark. "Julian hired my former employers to kill you three years ago. I was placed here as a sleeper agent. But Julian got sloppy. He double-crossed my cartel, murdered my brother in Palermo last month to tie up loose ends. So now, my contract with him is void. Tonight, we have a mutual enemy, Mr. Rossi."
Before Lorenzo could process the fact that his maid was a sleeper assassin, heavy footsteps thudded against the hardwood floor just outside the closet.
"Check the suits," Julian's voice barked from the center of the bedroom. "He's paranoid. Might have a wall safe hidden behind the cedar panels."
The brass handle of the closet door turned.
Lorenzo’s instincts, honed by decades of street warfare, took over. He gripped the heavy steel of the spare magazine Sofia had given him, his muscles coiling like a spring.
The door swung open, spilling harsh yellow light into the dark space. A massive enforcer in a tactical vest leaned in, a suppressed submachine gun leading the way.
He didn't even have time to register their faces.
Sofia moved with terrifying fluidity. She grabbed the barrel of the man's weapon, violently redirecting it upward while simultaneously driving the heel of her palm upward into his chin with a sickening crack. As the man went limp, Lorenzo caught him, dragging his dead weight into the closet to prevent his body armor from thudding against the floor.

Sofia snatched the submachine gun from the dead man's hands, checking the chamber with a crisp, professional click.
"One down," she whispered, her eyes completely dead. "Six left in the house."
