One month later, the federal courthouse was completely surrounded by news vans.
It was the biggest trial in the history of the state.
Marcus Thorne and twenty high-ranking officials were facing life in prison without parole.
Evelyn sat in the very back row of the gallery, completely unnoticed by the frantic reporters.
She wore a simple beige sweater, looking entirely different from the stern judge she used to be.
Lucas sat beside her, holding a notepad and pen, preparing to write the final chapter of his exposé.
The new judge, a strict and incorruptible woman, slammed her gavel down.
"The jury has reached a verdict," the judge announced to the completely silent courtroom.
The jury foreman stood up, holding a piece of paper that held the fate of an empire.
"On the charges of racketeering, murder, and conspiracy, we find the defendant, Marcus Thorne, guilty."
A collective gasp echoed through the room, followed by the rapid clicking of camera shutters.
Thorne showed no emotion, staring blankly ahead as federal marshals led him away in chains.
Evelyn watched him disappear through the wooden doors, feeling a profound sense of closure.
The corruption that had poisoned her career and threatened her family was finally eradicated.
She turned to Lucas, who was furiously scribbling notes with a proud smile on his face.
"You did it, Lucas," Evelyn said softly, touching his arm.
"We did it, Mom," Lucas corrected her, closing his notebook.
"Without you, I would have died in that warehouse, and the truth would have died with me."
They stood up and walked out of the courtroom together, ignoring the shouted questions from journalists.
The bright morning sun hit their faces as they stepped onto the marble steps of the courthouse.
Evelyn looked at the towering pillars of the building where she had spent the best years of her life.
