Chapter 10 - A New Beginning

The Innocence Defense Clinic was bustling with energy on a warm spring afternoon.

Evelyn sat at her desk, which was now completely repaired and bathed in sunlight.

She was reviewing a complex appeal case for a young man who had been wrongfully convicted of theft.

The front door opened, and Lucas walked in holding a framed piece of newspaper.

It was the front page of the Sunday Times, featuring his explosive, award-winning article.

The headline read, "The Fall of an Empire: How One Mother's Courage Brought Down a Cartel."

Lucas proudly hung the framed article on the brick wall of the clinic.

"It looks perfect right there," Lucas smiled, stepping back to admire his work.

"You flatter me too much in your writing," Evelyn laughed, shaking her head.

"I only wrote the absolute truth," Lucas replied, pulling up a chair across from her.

Evelyn looked at her son, marveling at the strong, principled man he had become.

The anger and resentment that had divided them for nine years were entirely gone.

"Agent Miller called me this morning," Evelyn mentioned, changing the subject slightly.

"Richard was transferred to a maximum-security facility in another state."

Lucas nodded slowly, his expression serious but calm.

"He will spend the rest of his life in a cage of his own making," Lucas said quietly.

"He made his choices, and we survived them."

Evelyn closed the file folder on her desk and smiled warmly.

"Yes, we did," she agreed, feeling lighter than she had in over a decade.

"Now, how about I buy the best investigative reporter in the city a decent lunch?"

"I would never turn down a free meal from my favorite lawyer," Lucas joked, standing up.

They walked out of the small clinic together, locking the door behind them.

The city streets were loud and chaotic, but Evelyn finally felt safe.

She had traded her judge’s robe for a chance at redemption, and she had won.

The gavel had finally fallen, and true justice had prevailed.

Their new life was just beginning, built on a foundation of absolute truth.
