Chapter 7 - THE TRIAL BEGINS

The heavy oak doors of the county courthouse swung open, revealing a courtroom that was packed to absolute capacity.

Maya sat completely upright at the prosecutor's table, wearing a sharp, meticulously tailored black designer suit.

She looked exactly like her late billionaire father, radiating an aura of intense power, quiet confidence, and unshakeable resolve.

David and Sarah were finally brought into the courtroom by armed bailiffs, wearing extremely bright, humiliating orange prison jumpsuits.

Sarah immediately started weeping loudly for the television cameras, looking intentionally fragile, broken, and pitifully weak.

Maya rolled her eyes in absolute disgust at the pathetic, highly calculated theatrical performance her mother was putting on for the sympathetic jury.

The lead state prosecutor stood up from his leather chair and walked to the center of the room to deliver his opening statement.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, what you are about to see is a case of the ultimate, most depraved betrayal imaginable," the prosecutor began, his voice echoing loudly.

"A mother and a stepfather maliciously conspired to burn their own innocent child alive just to secure a massive financial payout."

The prosecutor dramatically pointed a laser pointer at a large projector screen, displaying a high-definition photograph of the charred padlock.

The entire jury gasped collectively at the undeniably damning image of the heavy lock that had been used to trap a screaming teenager.

Sarah's highly paid defense attorney immediately tried to paint David as the violent, manipulative mastermind of the entire operation.

He desperately claimed that Sarah was heavily drugged, physically abused, and constantly manipulated throughout the entire duration of their marriage.

But Maya had anticipated this exact cowardly strategy, knowing her mother would gladly throw anyone under the bus to save herself.

She was formally called to the witness stand on the grueling second day of the heavily publicized trial.

She walked up the wooden steps with perfect posture, placing her right hand firmly on the sworn Bible.

She swore an oath to tell the absolute truth, knowing exactly how devastating that truth would be to the monsters who raised her.
