Chapter 6 - TAKING THE THRONE

The downtown hospital room smelled strongly of harsh industrial bleach and sterile rubbing alcohol.
Maya sat quietly in a plastic chair beside Detective Reed's hospital bed, watching the steady rise and fall of his chest.
He had miraculously survived the ambush, taking a grazing bullet to his left shoulder, but the exhausted doctors insisted he would make a full recovery.
"You need to go immediately back into deep hiding, Maya," Officer Jenkins said from the doorway, his hand resting cautiously on his holstered weapon.
"These cartel hitmen will not stop hunting you until you are dead and the massive trust fund money is legally released to your parents."
Maya stood up from the plastic chair, her facial expression harder and more resolute than it had ever been in her entire life.
"I am completely done running away from my own life," Maya stated firmly, staring out the hospital window at the sprawling city.
"If I hide in a bunker, they dictate my future, and I refuse to be a helpless victim anymore."
Maya walked purposefully out of the hospital room, pulling out her newly secured cell phone as she marched down the bright hallway.
She dialed the private, direct number of the Chief Financial Officer at her late father's multi-billion-dollar software company.
"This is Maya, the sole heir to this company," she said, her voice radiating absolute, unquestionable authority.
"I am officially claiming my rightful position as majority shareholder and acting CEO, effective as of this exact minute."
The wealthy, older executive on the other end of the line gasped in sheer surprise.
"But Miss Maya, the legal proceedings surrounding your parents are not finished yet, and the board has not convened," the executive protested weakly.
"I do not care about the board right now," Maya replied coldly, stepping into the hospital elevator.
"I want you to freeze every single corporate asset, lock down the primary accounts, and permanently block all offshore wire transfers."
By completely cutting off the massive money supply, Maya was effectively starving the beast that was hunting her.
The violent loan sharks could not physically steal what was heavily encrypted and locked behind a billion-dollar corporate financial firewall.
She was aggressively turning herself from a helpless, hiding teenager into a powerful corporate target that was simply too big for street thugs to hit.

When the elevator doors opened to the lobby, Maya walked out surrounded by newly hired, highly trained private military contractors.
She was finally ready to face her parents in a court of law.
