Chapter 20 - The Empire They Built

Years later, the name Julian Vance was mostly a footnote in Silicon Valley history—a cautionary tale of a brilliant mind who walked away from billions to disappear into the woods.

But in a small coastal town in Oregon, he was known as the guy who ran the logistics for the most successful independent photography gallery in the Pacific Northwest.

It was a Thursday night. Julian walked into the cabin, shaking the rain off his jacket. The house smelled of roasted chicken and developer fluid.

He walked into the living room and smiled. Clara was sitting on the rug, helping their four-year-old daughter build a wildly unstable tower out of wooden blocks.

"Daddy!" the little girl shrieked, abandoning the blocks to run into his arms.

Julian scooped her up, burying his face in her curls, before walking over to kiss Clara.

"How was the gallery?" Clara asked, leaning up to meet his lips.

"We're expanding into Portland next month," Julian said, his eyes glinting with a fraction of his old strategic fire. "I found a great retail space. The foot traffic is optimal."

"Don't get crazy, tech boy," Clara smirked, pulling him down to sit on the rug with them. "Keep the empire small."

Julian sat on the floor, watching his daughter knock down the wooden blocks with a joyous shout, while his wife leaned her head against his shoulder. He thought about the smoked-glass dining table, the empty penthouse, and the cold, terrifying isolation of his former life.

He looked at the chaotic, messy, profoundly beautiful life he had fought to get back.

"The empire is exactly the right size," Julian whispered, kissing Clara's hair. "I wouldn't change a single block."
