Chapter 1 - The Echo of Her Silence

Clara did not leave then. She had stayed through the IPO, the endless press tours, and the magazine covers that photoshopped the warmth out of her husband’s eyes. She stayed when dinner conversations shifted from changing the world to optimizing tax loopholes. Julian Vance sat on the edge of the mattress, the divorce papers feeling heavier than a lead weight in his hands. He replayed the last five years in his mind, searching for the exact moment the fraying rope had finally snapped.
There wasn't one massive explosive fight. There were no thrown vases or screaming matches in the foyer. Instead, there was a quiet, suffocating retreat. Clara had slowly stopped asking what time he would be home. She stopped leaving him a plate in the microwave. She stopped wearing the silver locket he had bought her with his first real paycheck, replacing it with nothing.

Julian pulled out his phone. His thumb hovered over her contact name—simply Clara, marked with a red heart he had added seven years ago. He pressed call. The phone rang once, twice, and then went straight to a generic, automated voicemail. She hadn't even set up a personal greeting on her new number.
He threw the phone against the wall. It shattered, raining glass onto the imported wool rug. The silence of the penthouse rushed back in, louder than the crash. He was a man who solved impossible algorithmic puzzles before his morning coffee, but he had entirely missed the fact that his wife had been packing her emotional bags for half a decade. Julian buried his face in his hands, breathing in the faint scent of her lavender shampoo still lingering on the pillows. She was gone.
