Chapter 5 - The Beast Unleashed

The transition from civilian to mafia insider was a brutal psychological whiplash. By the end of my first week at the estate, I had learned the layout of the property, the names of the inner circle, and the unspoken rule of the Rossi Syndicate: Julian’s word was absolute law.

I was sitting in the library one evening, trying to read a book, when the sounds of a scuffle erupted from the courtyard below. I walked to the massive window. Two of Julian’s enforcers were dragging a bloody, beaten man across the cobblestones toward the basement holding cells.

Five minutes later, Julian walked into the library. He was wearing his holster, his face set in a mask of pure, terrifying wrath.

“Who is that?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“One of Lorenzo’s lieutenants. We caught him trying to bribe a dock worker to smuggle weapons,” Julian said, pouring himself a drink. He didn't look at me. “I have to go downstairs. Do not leave this room, Clara.”

He turned to leave, but something in me snapped. I was tired of being treated like a fragile glass doll. “I’m coming with you.”

Julian stopped, turning slowly. “No, you aren't. Downstairs is ugly. Downstairs is where the monster lives. I won't let you see that.”

“I’ve already seen the monster,” I shot back, stepping closer to him. “You bled on me. You dragged me into this war. I’m not hiding in a library while you fight it.”

He stared down at me, his jaw clenching. For a moment, I thought he was going to yell. Instead, he let out a harsh breath, grabbed my hand, and led me to the basement.

The cell was cold, smelling of rust and copper. The lieutenant was chained to a metal chair. When Julian walked in, the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Julian didn't shout. He didn't rant. He spoke in a whisper that was infinitely more terrifying than a scream.

“Where is Lorenzo hiding?” Julian asked.

The man spat blood onto Julian’s polished shoes. “Go to hell.”

Julian didn't flinch. He slowly drew a silver combat knife from his belt. I gasped, stepping back against the wall. Julian paused. He looked over his shoulder at me, his eyes softening for a microsecond.

“Close your eyes, Clara,” he commanded softly.

I couldn't. I watched as Julian became the King. It was methodical, brutal, and flawlessly executed. Ten minutes later, the man was screaming the address of a warehouse in the industrial district.

Julian wiped the blade clean, handed it to Marco, and walked over to me. He gently cupped my face with his clean hand, his thumb tracing my cheekbone. “I warned you,” he whispered. “I am not a good man.”

“I don't need a good man,” I replied, my voice shaking, but my eyes locked on his. “I need a man who survives.”

A primal, dark fire ignited in Julian’s eyes. He leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine, sealing an unspoken vow in the darkness of the cell.
