Chapter 4 - The Gilded Cage

We drove for two hours, twisting through backroads until we reached a secluded, heavily wooded estate on the edge of the Puget Sound. Massive iron gates swung open as Julian typed a code into a remote.
The safehouse wasn't a house; it was a fortress of glass and black steel, surrounded by dense pines and a cliff drop into the freezing ocean. The moment we parked, the front doors flew open. A team of armed men in suits rushed out, followed by Marco, a tall, frantic-looking man with a scar over his left eye.
“Boss!” Marco yelled, helping Julian out of the car. A private medical team immediately swarmed him, placing him on a stretcher.
Julian grabbed Marco by the collar before they could wheel him away. “The girl,” Julian grunted, pointing a bloody finger at me. “She is a VIP. Treat her like a queen. If a single hair on her head is harmed, I will personally flay you alive.”
Marco swallowed hard, looking at me with wide eyes. “Understood, Boss.”
For the next three days, I was a prisoner in paradise. The medical team operated on Julian in a subterranean facility, while I was placed in a massive guest suite overlooking the water. I had silk sheets, a marble bathtub, and a closet suddenly filled with designer clothes in my exact size. But I wasn't allowed to leave the second floor, and the internet connection was strictly monitored.
On the fourth night, the door to my suite clicked open.
Julian stood in the doorway. He was pale, leaning heavily on a silver-tipped cane, wearing a dark velvet smoking jacket. But the fever was gone, and his eyes were sharp, dangerous, and entirely focused on me.
“You look better,” I said, sitting up on the edge of the bed, my heart doing a strange flutter.
“Thanks to you,” he replied, walking slowly into the room. He poured two glasses of bourbon from a crystal decanter on the sideboard and handed me one. “I owe you my life, Clara. In my world, a debt of blood is absolute. Ask for anything. Money. A new identity. A house in Europe. It’s yours.”
I looked down at the amber liquid. “I just want my life back.”
Julian sat in the armchair opposite me, his gaze softening. “I’m afraid that’s the one thing I can’t give you. The men who attacked me were Bratva. But they had inside help. My younger brother, Lorenzo. He sold me out to take the throne.”
My breath caught. “Your own brother?”
May you like
“Power makes monsters of men,” Julian said quietly. “Lorenzo knows you helped me. He knows what you look like. If you walk out those gates, he will capture you, torture you to find me, and kill you. You are only safe by my side.”
I stared at him, realizing the horrible truth. I hadn't just saved a mafia boss. I had anchored myself to him. We were bound together by blood and a betrayal that was about to tear the city apart.
