Chapter 6 - Rats in a Cage

Serena was pacing the stained carpet of the Motel 6, screaming into her cell phone.

"What do you mean you repossessed my car?! I am Serena Vance! You can't just take my Mercedes from a motel parking lot!"

She threw the phone at the wall just as Marcus walked in, looking like a drowned rat.

"They took the company," Marcus said hollowly, dropping his cardboard box onto the lumpy bed. "Jessica took it all. She froze everything."

Serena spun around, her beautiful face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. "You lied to me! You told me you were a billionaire! You told me she was just some low-level government paper-pusher who was never around!"

"She is!" Marcus yelled. "Or... I thought she was. I didn't know the trust had these clauses! I didn't know she could do this!"

"You idiot!" Serena shrieked, slapping him across the face. The crack echoed in the cheap room. "I maxed out my credit cards to keep up my lifestyle because you promised me a ring and a mansion! Now my bank accounts are locked, my car is gone, and the landlord for my penthouse just emailed me an eviction notice!"

Marcus rubbed his red cheek, glaring at her. "Well, maybe if you hadn't abused my daughter, Jessica wouldn't have gone nuclear!"

"Oh, don't play the saint now, Marcus!" Serena laughed bitterly. "You knew I hated that brat. You're the one who locked her in the closet when she wouldn't stop crying for her mommy. You're just as guilty as I am!"

The motel door suddenly splintered open.

Wood shards flew across the room as the door was kicked off its hinges. Four heavily armed police officers swarmed into the room, their weapons drawn.

"Seattle Police! Nobody move! Hands where I can see them!"

Marcus screamed and dropped to his knees. Serena tried to run for the bathroom, but an officer grabbed her arm, spinning her around and slamming her against the cheap drywall.

"Marcus Carlisle and Serena Vance," the lead detective said, stepping into the room holding a sheaf of papers. "You are both under arrest for felony child abuse, child endangerment, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent. I highly suggest you use it."
