Chapter 5 - The Humiliation

Marcus thought he could salvage his pride by going to his office. He showed up at the downtown high-rise at 9:00 AM, wearing a wrinkled suit, planning to bluff his way into the accounts and wire whatever liquid cash he could find to an offshore account.

He strutted through the glass doors of Carlisle Ventures, expecting his receptionist to greet him with his usual latte.

Instead, he found two armed private security guards waiting in the lobby.

"Morning, Mr. Carlisle," the head guard said, stepping into Marcus's path. "We're going to need your keycard and your company phone."

"Excuse me?" Marcus barked. "I am the CEO. Get out of my way."

"Not anymore," a sharp voice echoed from the hallway. My corporate attorney, Evelyn, stepped out of the boardroom. She was holding a cardboard box. "Your wife's trust has formally dissolved this entity. All employees have been given a generous severance package and sent home. This office is now private property."

Marcus sneered. "She can't do this! I built this company!"

"You played golf while Jessica's money paid the bills," Evelyn corrected icily. She tossed the cardboard box at his feet. It contained a framed photo of him and a few cheap desk knick-knacks. "Here are your personal effects. You have sixty seconds to leave before we have you arrested for trespassing."

"I'll sue!" Marcus screamed, his face turning purple. "I'll take her for half of everything!"

Evelyn laughed. It was a cold, terrifying sound. "With what lawyer, Marcus? You have exactly fourteen dollars in your personal checking account. Oh, and by the way, the DA just signed off on your arrest warrants. I'd use that fourteen dollars for a bus ticket, if I were you."

Marcus staggered backward, the reality finally crushing him. He grabbed his box and fled, the sneers of the security guards burning into his back.
