Chapter 10 - A New Fortress

Six months had passed since the dramatic events in Chicago.

The ruins of the Rhode Island chateau had been entirely bulldozed, the ashes cleared away to make room for something new.

Eleanor and Richard were denied bail, facing life in federal prison for the murder of Arthur Sterling.

Leo sat on the porch of a beautiful, sunlit farmhouse in upstate New York.

It wasn't a massive mansion with eighteen bedrooms, and there were no iron gates keeping the world out.

It was just a warm, comfortable home filled with light and laughter.

Leo wore a new set of state-of-the-art robotic leg braces, funded by his trust, which allowed him to walk with minimal support.

He stood up carefully, taking a few steps toward the kitchen where a delicious smell was wafting through the air.

Clara was at the stove, humming quietly as she flipped pancakes.

She wasn't wearing a maid's uniform anymore.

A stack of legal documents sat on the kitchen island next to a fresh vase of sunflowers.

They were official adoption papers.

Clara had used a portion of Leo's trust to legally become his permanent guardian and adoptive mother.

Marcus walked through the back door, wiping grease off his hands with a rag.

He had taken a job as the estate manager for their new, much smaller property.

"The ramp on the back deck is finished, kid," Marcus smiled, tossing Leo an apple.

Leo caught it and looked at Clara, who was smiling warmly at him.

For the first time in his entire life, Leo wasn't an invisible burden or a tragic secret.

He was simply a boy in a kitchen, surrounded by people who loved him fiercely.

"Breakfast is ready," Clara announced, setting the plates on the small, cozy dining table.

Leo walked over, taking his seat not at the far end of a lonely banquet hall, but right next to Clara.

The old fortress had burned to the ground.

But from its ashes, they had built a true home.
