Chapter 1 - The Padlocked Door

Clara coughed violently as the thick, acidic smoke seared her lungs.

The heat of the inferno was unbearable, blistering her skin as she crawled up the final few steps to the third-floor landing.

Flames licked at the expensive velvet wallpaper, turning the Sterling family’s opulent fortress into a blazing death trap.

"Leo!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking over the roar of the collapsing roof.

"Clara! Help me!" his small voice echoed from the end of the corridor.

She scrambled toward his bedroom, dodging burning chunks of mahogany molding that crashed from the ceiling.

When she reached his door, she grabbed the brass handle, burning her palm instantly.

She ignored the searing pain and pushed, but the door wouldn't budge.

It wasn't jammed by the fire.

Clara looked down through the suffocating smoke and froze in absolute horror.

A heavy, industrial steel padlock had been fastened to the outside of the door.

Someone had intentionally locked an eleven-year-old paralyzed boy inside a burning building.

"Clara, I can't move!" Leo sobbed from the other side of the thick oak wood.

Panic surged through Clara's veins, rapidly replaced by a blinding, ferocious rage.

Eleanor’s cold warning in the courtyard suddenly made perfect, terrifying sense.

The aunt hadn't been trying to save Clara’s life; she had been protecting her own alibi.

Clara looked around desperately and spotted a heavy bronze bust of Richard Sterling on a nearby pedestal.

With adrenaline flooding her system, she lifted the massive statue and smashed it against the padlock.

Once.

Twice.

On the third brutal strike, the metal bracket splintered, and Clara kicked the door open.

What she saw inside made her blood run entirely cold.

Leo was lying on the floor, dragging himself toward the door with his bare hands.

His expensive, custom-made leg braces—the only things that allowed him to stand—were gone.

"They took them," Leo wept, looking up at her with terror in his eyes.

"Aunt Eleanor came in, took my braces, locked the door, and said goodbye."

Clara scooped the fragile boy into her arms, pressing her wet shawl over his small face.

"I've got you," she whispered fiercely.

"And I promise you, they are going to pay for this."
