Chapter 6 - The Ambush

They left the gala in Dante’s armored Maybach, Enzo driving, rain slicking the midnight streets of Manhattan.

Sophia’s adrenaline was crashing, the pain in her ribs returning with a vengeance. She leaned her head against the tinted glass.

“Did we get what we wanted?” she asked.

“My men are tracking Rossi’s lieutenants right now,” Dante said, checking his phone. “He was furious you insulted him. He ordered a hit on my southern docks. My capos are waiting for them. We wipe out his muscle tonight, and Rossi is defenseless by morning.”

Suddenly, a deafening crunch of metal echoed through the car.

A black SUV rammed into the side of the Maybach, sending them spinning across the wet asphalt of the Queensboro Bridge. Sophia screamed as her ribs tore.

Dante unbuckled his seatbelt, throwing his massive body entirely over hers, shielding her from the shattering glass as a second SUV slammed into their front, boxing them in.

Gunfire erupted. The distinct rat-tat-tat of automatic weapons lighting up the bridge.

“Enzo! Drive!” Dante roared, drawing his Glock from his shoulder holster.

“Engine block is dead, Boss!” Enzo yelled back, firing through the shattered windshield.

“Stay down,” Dante ordered Sophia, his eyes wild with the primal need to protect.

He kicked his door open and rolled out into the rain.

Sophia lay on the floor of the car, her hands covering her ears, terrified. For years, she had known Dante was a criminal, but he had kept the violence sanitized, hidden behind closed doors and boardrooms. Now, the reality of his world was deafening.

She watched through the shattered window as Dante moved with lethal, terrifying precision. He wasn't just a boss who gave orders; he was a predator. He dropped two men before they could reload, using the car door as cover.

Sirens wailed in the distance. The NYPD was coming.

The remaining shooters, realizing they were outgunned by Dante and Enzo, jumped back into one of the SUVs and peeled off, tires smoking.

Dante appeared at the door, his face smeared with rain and blood. He reached in, hauling Sophia gently into his arms.

“I’ve got you,” he breathed, his chest heaving. “I’ve got you.”
