Chapter 4 - The Bait

By day three, the penthouse felt less like a sanctuary and more like a gilded cage.
Dante had doubled his security. The elevator was locked down. Sophia spent her days coordinating with insurance companies for her burned warehouse, pacing the floor, and watching Dante wage a silent, invisible war from his study.
That evening, Dante walked into the living room carrying a large black garment bag.
“I need you to do something for me, and I need you to trust me,” he said, laying the bag on the sofa.
Sophia crossed her arms, wincing as her ribs twinged. “I don't like that tone.”
“Lorenzo Rossi is hosting a charity gala tonight at the Pierre Hotel. It is neutral ground. A public event with politicians and the press. He thinks I am hiding. He thinks I am terrified because he touched you.” Dante unzipped the bag. “We are going to walk into his gala, and we are going to show him that you are untouchable.”
Sophia looked at the dress. It was a breathtaking, liquid-silver slip dress with a high slit. It was armor masked as silk.
“Dante, I’m covered in bruises.”
“The dress covers the ribs. My makeup artist is upstairs, she can cover the temple,” Dante said gently, stepping into her space. He cupped her jaw. “Rossi wants to see you broken. I need him to see you radiant. It will force him to make a mistake.”
Sophia looked into the eyes of the man who had broken her heart by refusing to leave the mafia. She knew she should say no. She should demand to be taken to a police station. But she also knew the police couldn't stop a man like Lorenzo Rossi. Only Dante could.
“Fine,” Sophia breathed. “But if we are doing this, we do it my way. You don't leave my side.”
A dark, possessive smirk crossed his lips. “I had no intention of doing so.”
Three hours later, Sophia stepped out of the bedroom. The bruises were gone, masked by flawless makeup. The silver dress clung to her curves, making her look like a silver blade.
Dante, dressed in a bespoke black tuxedo, stopped breathing when he saw her.
He closed the distance between them, pulling a velvet box from his pocket. Inside was a blinding diamond tennis necklace. He stepped behind her, clasping the heavy, cold jewels around her throat.

“You are breathtaking,” he whispered against her ear, sending a shiver down her spine. “Stay close to me tonight, Mrs. Moretti.”
She didn't correct him on the title.
