Chapter 5 - The Ambush

That evening, the peace of the estate was violently shattered.
Dr. Arturo, realizing Mateo Delgado was digging into his past, had panicked and hired a cartel hit squad to erase the loose ends.
Elena was in the kitchen pouring milk for Isabella when the first gunshot shattered the reinforced glass.
Alarms blared instantly, flashing red lights bathing the mansion in chaos.
"Get down!" Mateo roared, sprinting into the kitchen and tackling Elena and the child to the floor.
Bullets tore through the expensive cabinetry, sending plates crashing to the marble tiles.
Mateo shielded them with his own body, pulling a sleek firearm from a holster at his waist.
"Stay behind the island," he ordered Elena, his eyes wild with adrenaline.
"Cover her ears!"
Elena curled her body over Isabella, squeezing her eyes shut as deafening gunfire erupted outside.
Mateo's highly trained security team engaged the intruders in the courtyard.
Mateo fired back at a shadowed figure trying to breach the patio doors.
The glass shattered completely, but the intruder dropped lifelessly to the stone floor.
Elena trembled, praying to every saint she knew.
Within five agonizing minutes, the gunfire ceased, replaced by the shouts of Mateo's men securing the perimeter.
Hector rushed into the kitchen, his suit covered in dust.
"Threat neutralized, boss," Hector panted.
"They were hired guns from Veracruz."
Mateo lowered his weapon and immediately turned back to Elena and Isabella.
He pulled them both into a fierce, protective embrace on the kitchen floor.

"I've got you," he whispered into Elena's hair.
"I will never let anyone hurt you."
