Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

With my father back in jail on a probation violation, my mother was left alone in the house to face the financial ruin they had created.

The payday loan collectors came knocking. The utilities, which I had quietly transferred out of my name, were shut off. My mother, desperate, tried to put the house on the market to liquidate the equity and pay off her mounting debts.

That was when Sarah executed our master stroke.

When my mother went to the real estate agent to list the property, she discovered she couldn't sell it. A massive lien had been placed on the house.

Over the years, I hadn't just paid for groceries. I had paid for a new roof, a new HVAC system, and two years of property taxes. Because I had kept every single receipt, invoice, and bank transfer, Sarah filed a civil suit against them for unjust enrichment and financial fraud.

We slapped a $45,000 lien on the property. The house could not be sold until I was paid back in full.

My mother called my phone—a violation of the restraining order, which I promptly recorded.

"You're destroying us!" she sobbed into the voicemail. "You're taking the house! Where am I supposed to go?"

She used the exact same words she had mocked me with weeks ago.

Where do you think you're going to go?

I forwarded the voicemail to the police.
