Chapter 2 - The Knock at the Door

The police officer who met me at the diner was a seasoned veteran named Miller. He took one look at my bruised face and my shivering son, and his demeanor shifted from routine to fiercely protective.

When I showed him the video on my phone, his jaw tightened. He didn't ask if I had provoked them. He didn't ask what led up to it. He simply asked, "Where are they right now?"

"At the house," I gave him the address. "The one I pay the taxes on."

Officer Miller called for backup. He advised me to take Leo to a hotel for the night while they handled the situation. I used the emergency credit card I kept hidden for disasters—the very fund my mother had demanded I empty for her—and booked a quiet room at a Marriott across town.

Later, through the police report and a sympathetic phone call from Officer Miller, I learned exactly how the raid went down.

At 8:30 PM, two squad cars pulled up to my parents' house. My mother answered the door in her silk robe, immediately wearing her sweetest, most innocent smile.

"Can I help you, officers?" she had asked.

"We're looking for Arthur and Diane," Officer Miller said.

My father had stomped to the door, beer in hand, puffing out his chest. "That's us. If this is about the trash on the lawn, we're cleaning it up. Our deadbeat daughter had a tantrum and left a mess."

"Actually, Arthur," Miller replied, stepping into the foyer, "this is about the felony assault on your daughter you committed an hour ago. Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

My father had resisted, shouting that it was his house and he was just "disciplining" his disrespectful child. He thought the police would take a man’s word over a runaway mother’s. He thought wrong.

When they slapped the cuffs on him, my mother began to scream, demanding they stop, threatening to sue the city. She was charged with accessory and disturbing the peace when she lunged at a female officer.

Both of my parents spent the night in a cold concrete cell while Leo and I slept in a king-sized hotel bed, safe and warm.
