Chapter 6 - The Cornered Rat

Across the city in the Main Line, the Sterling mansion was descending into absolute chaos.
The grand, crystal-lit hallways were littered with packed suitcases and shredded documents.
Julian paced the floor of his study, his tailored suit jacket thrown carelessly onto a chair.
He was sweating profusely, dialing Marcus Vance’s number over and over again.
Every single call went straight to a generic, automated voicemail.
"He took the money and ran!" Eleanor screamed, throwing a crystal vase against the wall.
The vase shattered into a hundred pieces, scattering across the priceless silk rug.
"I told you not to hire mercenaries, Julian!"
"I told you they have no class, no loyalty, and no breeding!"
Julian spun around, his face pale and twisted with raw, unfiltered terror.
"Shut up, Mother!" Julian roared, his voice cracking violently.
"Breeding does not matter when the cartel is coming to cut our heads off!"
"Clara’s mother threatened to release the ledger, and Marcus knew she wasn't bluffing."
He frantically opened his wall safe, grabbing stacks of emergency cash and throwing them into a leather duffel bag.
"We have to drive to the private airfield right now."
"The pilot is on standby."
"If we can get to the Cayman Islands, we can disappear before the cartel realizes the transfer is stalled."
Eleanor, shaking with indignation and fear, began stuffing her diamond necklaces into a velvet pouch.
"I will not live like a fugitive in a third-world country, Julian."
"We are the Sterlings."
"We own this state!"
"We own nothing!" Julian screamed back.
Suddenly, Julian’s personal cell phone began to ring loudly.
It was not a phone call; it was a notification from his private offshore banking application.
He snatched the phone from the desk, his eyes scanning the glowing screen.
His face drained of all remaining color, turning a sickly, translucent white.
"Julian?" Eleanor asked, her voice trembling as she saw his expression.
"What is it?"
Julian dropped the phone onto the desk as if it had burned his hand.
"The accounts are frozen."
"All of them."
"The corporate accounts, the personal trusts, the offshore shells."
"The FBI just locked every single dollar we have."
Eleanor collapsed onto the leather sofa, her hands covering her face as she began to sob hysterically.
Julian stared blankly at the wall, the reality of his doom finally crushing the arrogance out of him.
He was broke, he was trapped, and he was out of time.
Down in South Philadelphia, Arthur was watching the exact same banking data on his monitors.
"The trap has officially snapped shut," Arthur announced.
"The feds have frozen his entire empire."
Clara looked at the phone sitting on the iron desk.
"Call him," Clara said, her voice completely devoid of fear.
I looked at my daughter, proud of the undeniable strength radiating from her.
I picked up the phone, dialed Julian’s private number, and put it on speaker.
He answered on the first ring, his breathing heavy and ragged.
"Clara?" Julian begged, his voice pathetic and small.
"Julian, it is your wife," Clara said softly, stepping closer to the microphone.
"You gave us seventy-two hours to crawl back to you."
"But it looks like you are the one who is out of time."
"Please, Clara," Julian sobbed into the receiver.
"They are going to kill me."
"You have to tell your mother to give me the ledger so I can pay them."
"You lost the right to ask me for anything the moment you let your mother put her hands on me," Clara replied coldly.
May you like
"Goodbye, Julian."
She reached out and disconnected the call herself, severing her ties to him forever.
