Chapter 3 - The Devil’s Ledger

The silence in the windowless room above the butcher shop was absolute, broken only by the frantic hum of Arthur’s laptop fans and the ragged sound of Clara’s breathing.
A drug cartel.
The words hung in the stale, metallic air like a physical weight, pressing down on our chests and suffocating the oxygen from the room.
Julian Sterling was not just a greedy corporate aristocrat skimming off the top of pension funds to finance his mother’s lavish charity galas.
He was the clean, smiling, public face for monsters who solved their financial discrepancies with chainsaws and acid barrels.
I looked at my daughter, whose pale face had drained of whatever little color remained.
She was trembling so violently that the old leather sofa squeaked beneath her weight.
"Julian told me his new clients were private equity investors from South America," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with terror.
"He hosted them at the mansion last month, pouring them thousand-dollar scotch and laughing at their jokes."
"Eleanor even had the chef prepare a special five-course meal for them."
Carmine swore loudly in Italian, running a massive, scarred hand over his bald head.
"These aren't people you take to court, Beatrice," Carmine growled, pacing the small length of the room like a caged tiger.
"These are the kind of people who will burn down half of South Philly just to make sure they get their money back."
"If they find out Julian lost their ledger to his runaway wife, they won’t wait for a trial."
"They will slaughter the Sterlings, and then they will come for everyone in this room."
Arthur did not look up from the screen; his fingers were a blur as he set up heavily encrypted firewalls around his server.
"He's right, Bea," Arthur said, a bead of cold sweat dripping down his temple.
"This drive shows that Julian has been washing nearly ten million dollars a month through his real estate acquisitions."
"But here is the catch: he hasn't moved this month's payment yet."
"The cartel's money is currently sitting in a temporary holding account, waiting to be dispersed into the offshore shell companies."
"Without this specific flash drive, Julian cannot authorize the final transfer."
"He doesn't just need this drive to stay out of federal prison; he needs it to stay alive."
Suddenly, Clara’s cell phone, sitting dead on the desk, lit up.
Arthur had connected it to a bypass router to block location tracking, but the incoming caller ID flashed brightly across the screen.
It was Julian.
I reached across the table and picked up the phone, swiping the green button and putting it on speaker.
"Clara," Julian’s voice barked through the small speaker, completely stripped of its usual polished, public-relations charm.
He sounded frantic, breathless, and dangerously unhinged.
"I know you took it."
"I know you took the silver drive from the study."
"You have no idea what you have done, you stupid, ungrateful little girl."
I leaned close to the microphone, my voice dropping to a low, icy register.
"Hello, Julian."
"Beatrice," he breathed out, a mix of pure hatred and desperate panic lacing his tone.
"Put my wife on the phone right now."
"Your wife is currently resting," I replied calmly.
"She is recovering from the beating your mother gave her while you watched."
"Listen to me, you old fool," Julian snarled, his voice echoing loudly in our small sanctuary.
"You think you’ve won? You think you can use that drive to blackmail me for a divorce settlement?"
"If you take that drive to the authorities, we are all dead."
"The people I work for do not leave loose ends."
"Bring the drive back to the mansion within the next hour, and I will give you two million dollars in untraceable cash."
"I will let Clara walk away, no strings attached."
"But if you do not bring it back, I won't have to send my security team."
"I will just tell my business partners who stole their money, and they will butcher you in the street."
I let his threat hang in the air for a long moment, making sure he felt the silence.
"You made one critical miscalculation, Julian," I said, leaning closer to the phone.
"You assume I am terrified of your partners."
"But I have been reading your emails, Julian."
"Your cartel friends are demanding their transfer by midnight tomorrow."
"You have twenty-four hours left on your own deadline."
"If you ever contact my daughter again, I will send the decrypted ledger directly to the cartel's rival organization in Mexico."
"They would love to know exactly how your partners move their cash."
I ended the call and tossed the phone onto the desk.
Arthur stared at me, his mouth slightly open.
"You just threatened the biggest drug syndicate in North America," Arthur whispered.
"No," I replied, standing up and tying my hair back.

"I just put a timer on Julian Sterling’s life."
"Now, we need to prepare for the counter-attack, because he is going to send everything he has to get that drive back tonight."
