Chapter 8 - The Confession

The aftermath was a blur of flashing red and blue lights, shouting police officers, and federal agents. The Sterling Spire was swarming with law enforcement.

Arthur sat on the bumper of an ambulance in the rain-slicked plaza outside his building. Paramedics had checked him over, finding nothing but bruises and minor smoke inhalation.

A few feet away, the blonde assassin was being loaded into an armored FBI transport vehicle. The man hadn't said a single word since waking up from the taser shock. He was a professional to the end.

Julian, however, was weeping openly as detectives read him his rights and shoved him into the back of a squad car. The mighty corporate titan had crumbled the moment the handcuffs clicked.

Vance walked over to Arthur, handing him a cup of terrible, lukewarm police coffee.

"It's over," Vance said, leaning against the ambulance. "The feds are executing a raid on Phalanx Pharma headquarters in Chicago right now. Julian kept receipts. He documented everything to use as leverage later. He handed them a conspiracy charge on a silver platter."

Arthur took a sip of the coffee. It was awful, but he had never tasted anything better. He was alive.

"Where are they?" Arthur asked.

Vance pointed toward a second ambulance parked near the command tent.

Maria Santos was sitting on the back step, wrapped in a foil emergency blanket. Leo was sitting beside her, swinging his legs, drinking a fresh bottle of strawberry milk that a kindly EMT had found for him.

Arthur stood up, ignoring the ache in his joints, and walked over to them.

When Maria saw him approaching, she tried to stand up, a look of ingrained deference on her face.

"No, no. Please, sit, Maria," Arthur said gently, holding up a hand.

He stood before the mother and son. A billionaire and a maintenance worker, brought together by the courage of a nine-year-old boy.

"Mr. Sterling," Maria said nervously. "Leo... Leo didn't mean to cause any trouble. He knows he isn't supposed to be on the executive floors."

Arthur let out a soft, genuine laugh. "Maria, your son just uncovered a massive corporate assassination plot, saved my life, and took down a highly trained killer with a wall-mounted taser. If he wants to sit on my desk and eat ice cream tomorrow, he has my full permission."

Leo looked up, a small smile breaking through his exhaustion. "Really?"

"Really," Arthur said, his expression turning serious. He crouched down so he was eye-level with the boy again. "Leo, I owe you my life. If you hadn't spoken up, if you had decided it wasn't your problem... I wouldn't be standing here."

"You looked like a nice man," Leo shrugged simply. "My mom says you should always help people if you can."

Arthur looked at Maria. She was a single mother, working nights in a skyscraper, struggling to make ends meet, yet she had raised a child with more honor and courage than a boardroom full of executives.

"Maria," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. "I need people I can trust. And tonight proved my circle of trust was entirely broken. I would like to offer you a new position."

Maria blinked in surprise. "A position? Sir, I only know how to clean."

"You know how to raise a hero," Arthur corrected. "I am appointing you as the Head of Estate Management for my private residences. You will have a staff, a full salary, benefits, and you will never hold a mop again unless you want to. And as for Leo..."

Arthur looked at the boy.

"Your education, from now until you decide to stop going to school, is fully funded. Whatever college you want. Whatever you want to be. The Sterling Foundation will cover it."

May you like

Maria gasped, covering her mouth with her hands as tears spilled over her cheeks. "Mr. Sterling... Arthur... I don't know what to say."

"Say yes," Arthur smiled. "Because I don't take no for an answer."
