Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Machine

"Are people really trying to hurt you?"

Arthur Sterling looked at the boy. The question was innocent, yet it carried the heavy weight of a world Leo was entirely too young to understand.

"When you build something large enough, Leo," Arthur said, his voice quiet but steady, "there will always be people who believe they deserve it more than you do. Yes. People are trying to hurt me."

Before Leo could ask another question, three sharp knocks rapped against the heavy oak door. A two-second pause. Two more knocks.

"Come in," Arthur commanded.

The door opened without a sound. Vance Keller stepped into the office, securing the deadbolt behind him with a fluid, practiced motion. Vance did not look like a corporate security chief. He wore no suit, only a black tactical sweater and dark slacks that concealed the lethal weapons strapped to his body. His eyes, the color of chipped flint, swept the room in a fraction of a second, assessing the threat level, the sightlines from the windows, and finally, the small boy sitting on the edge of the leather armchair.

"Arthur," Vance said, his voice a low rumble. "Status."

Arthur gestured toward the bone-china cup resting on his obsidian desk. "Our young friend here just saved my life. He witnessed a man posing as catering staff dose my morning tea. Broad shoulders, blonde hair pushed back, charcoal suit, gold ring on the left index finger. No lanyard."

Vance didn't react with shock. He simply walked to the desk, pulled a pair of black nitrile gloves from his pocket, and snapped them on. He leaned over the cup, sniffing the air a few inches above the steam without inhaling directly.

"Bitter almond?" Vance muttered, more to himself than Arthur. "No. Faint metallic edge. Arsenic derivative or a synthetic neurotoxin. The lab will confirm, but if it's synthetic, one sip would have stopped your heart before you hit the floor. It mimics a massive cardiac event."

Vance turned his piercing gaze to Leo. The boy shrank back slightly, clutching his strawberry milk.

"What's your name, kid?" Vance asked, his tone softening just enough to be approachable.

"Leo."

"You did good, Leo. You did really good." Vance looked back at Arthur, all business. "If the hitter is a professional—and the use of a synthetic cardiac agent suggests he is—he won’t just walk away. He'll wait to confirm the target is down. When the paramedics don't show up, he'll know the hit failed."

Arthur’s jaw tightened. "Which means he is still in the building."

"Exactly," Vance said, pulling a encrypted tablet from his belt. "I'm initiating protocol 'Winter Mute.' The Sterling Spire goes into complete lockdown. No elevators. No magnetic door access. The steel shutters on the lower levels will drop. Nobody gets in, nobody gets out."

"Wait," Leo suddenly piped up, his voice trembling.

Both men looked at him.

Leo's knuckles were white around the plastic bottle. "My mom. She's on forty-five. If the bad man figures out I saw him... if he saw me run away from the pantry... he might go looking for me."

Arthur felt a chill that had nothing to do with the air conditioning. The boy was right. If the assassin checked the catering hallway cameras or retraced his steps, he would realize a child had been hiding in the supply closet.

"Vance," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a terrifying register. "We need his mother. Now."

"I'm on it," Vance said, racking the slide of a concealed sidearm. "What's her name, Leo?"

"Maria," Leo whispered. "Maria Santos. She wears a blue uniform. Please don't let him hurt my mom."

Arthur walked over and knelt in front of the boy, bringing himself down to Leo's eye level. "Leo, look at me."

The boy met his gaze.

"I have fought cartels, governments, and billionaires," Arthur said, every word dripping with absolute authority. "I promise you, on my life, no one is going to touch your mother. Vance, go get Maria. I will secure the boy in the panic room."

Vance nodded once and slipped out the door, disappearing into the shadows of the fifty-story skyscraper like a ghost.
