Chapter 9 - Rain and Ruin

Clara awoke to the freezing sting of rain on her face.
She was tied to a metal chair in an abandoned, rusted shipping warehouse. The smell of salt and decay filled the air.
Victoria Sterling stood in front of her, looking like a madwoman. Her designer clothes were soaked and ruined. Behind her stood three heavily armed mercenaries.
“You just had to ruin everything!” Victoria screamed, pacing like a caged animal. “You were supposed to be a good little girl and marry Arthur! Now I’ve lost my money, my home, my reputation!”
“You did this to yourself,” Clara spat, coughing as the lingering sedatives made her dizzy. “Julian will find you. And he will kill you.”
“Julian Vance is a businessman,” Victoria sneered. “He won't risk his life for a fake wife. He’s probably signing the transfer papers right now.”
Suddenly, the heavy steel doors of the warehouse blew entirely off their hinges in a massive, deafening explosion.
Smoke and rain poured into the cavernous space.
Through the dust, a figure emerged. Julian didn't send his strike team. He led them.
He was wearing tactical gear over his ruined suit, holding a customized assault rifle. His eyes were black with a murderous rage Clara had never seen before.
Victoria’s mercenaries raised their weapons, but they were vastly outmatched. Julian and his men moved with terrifying precision. Short, controlled bursts of gunfire echoed through the warehouse. Within thirty seconds, the three mercenaries were dead on the concrete.
Victoria shrieked, grabbing a pistol from the ground and aiming it wildly at Clara’s head.
“Stay back!” Victoria screamed. “I’ll kill her! I swear to God I’ll kill her!”
Julian didn't stop walking. He didn't even raise his rifle. He dropped it onto the wet concrete. He walked slowly toward Victoria, radiating an aura of pure, paralyzing death.
“Shoot her,” Julian challenged softly, his voice echoing in the vast space. “But know this, Victoria. If she dies, I will keep you alive. I will lock you in a room beneath my estate, and I will spend the rest of my natural life ensuring you experience every torture known to mankind.”
Victoria’s hand shook so violently she could barely hold the weapon. She looked into Julian’s eyes and saw no bluff. Only a promise.
With a sob of absolute defeat, Victoria dropped the gun.
Julian stepped forward, slamming his fist into Victoria’s jaw, knocking her out cold.
He immediately dropped to his knees in front of Clara, pulling a knife to slice through her zip-ties. The moment her hands were free, she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his tactical vest, sobbing into the rain.

Julian dropped the knife, wrapping his massive arms tightly around her, burying his face in her wet hair.
“I’ve got you,” he choked out, his voice thick with raw emotion. “I’ve got you, my love. You’re safe.”
