Chapter 5 - The Sabotage

The takeover of Sterling Industries was brutal, swift, and absolute. Julian installed his own executives, froze Victoria’s corporate accounts, and began the arduous process of untangling the financial mess Clara’s stepmother had created.

For a month, Clara and Julian worked side-by-side. Clara discovered she had a brilliant mind for logistics, a trait she inherited from her late father. Julian, to her surprise, didn't sideline her; he mentored her. Late nights in his home office over Chinese takeout and spreadsheets became their sanctuary.

But a cornered animal is the most dangerous kind.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Julian’s head of security, Marcus, burst into the boardroom where Julian and Clara were reviewing quarterly projections.

“Sir, we have a massive breach,” Marcus said urgently. “The blueprints for the Vanguard Tech merger were leaked to a rival firm in Beijing an hour ago. The deal is completely compromised.”

Julian stood up, his chair scraping violently against the floor. “How? That server is air-gapped.”

“It was sent from an internal IP address, sir,” Marcus hesitated, glancing at Clara. “It was sent from Mrs. Vance’s personal laptop.”

The room went dead silent.

Clara’s stomach plummeted. “What? No! Julian, I swear, I didn't—”

“Check the security footage,” Julian barked at Marcus, his face unreadable.

“We did. The cameras in the west wing were looped during the time of the transfer. It looks like an inside job.” Marcus looked grim. “The board is demanding an emergency meeting. They want her arrested for corporate espionage.”

Clara looked at Julian, her heart shattering. The cold, calculating billionaire was staring at her. This was exactly how Victoria had operated—framing Clara for her own mistakes.

“Julian, please,” Clara whispered, tears filling her eyes. “You know me. I wouldn't do this.”

Julian stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. Then, his voice dropped to absolute zero.

“Marcus,” Julian said coldly. “Confiscate her laptop. Confine her to the penthouse. She doesn't leave without my explicit permission.”

Clara gasped as if she had been struck. Julian turned his back on her, walking out of the boardroom without a second glance. The betrayal sliced deeper than Victoria’s diamond ring ever could.
