Chapter 6 - Securing the Perimeter

At six o'clock on Wednesday morning, the sun had not yet risen over the Oregon pines, but the executive suite of my hotel room had been transformed into a tactical command post. Marcus Thorne sat at the mahogany dining table, flanked by two junior associate attorneys from his firm and a licensed private investigator named David Vance—a former federal agent whom Marcus regularly utilized for complex asset recovery cases.
On the table between us lay the original, fifty-page prenuptial agreement that Brenda had signed three weeks before our wedding in Portland.
"When you insisted on including Section 14—the Moral Conduct and Child Welfare Fiduciary Clause—Brenda’s attorney fought me for three days to get it removed," Marcus said, tapping the highlighted legal text with a gold pen. "He knew exactly how dangerous it was. But because you refused to proceed with the marriage without it, she signed it."
"Read the exact language to me, Marcus," I said, standing by the window with a fresh cup of black coffee while Leo slept soundly in the adjoining bedroom. "I want zero ambiguity when we hit her today."
Marcus adjusted his glasses and read from the document with cold, legal precision:
"‘In the event that the Second Party (Brenda Vance) or any member of her immediate family residing within or visiting the primary marital residence engages in documented physical, psychological, or emotional neglect, mistreatment, or abuse toward the First Party’s minor child (Leo Vance), including but not limited to the denial of medical or communicative accommodations, all spousal maintenance, alimony, property division rights, and residential tenancy claims shall be immediately and permanently forfeited. Upon written presentation of such violation, the Second Party agrees to vacate the primary marital residence within twenty-four hours without contest.’"
"It is bulletproof, Arthur," the junior associate chimed in, handing a secondary stack of legal filings across the table. "We spent the night drafting an Emergency Ex-Parte Order of Protection and a Formal Notice of Ejectment based on Leo’s written testimony and the photographic evidence of his physical condition when you removed him from the greenhouse."
"We need more than just Leo’s handwritten statement to satisfy the judge before noon," I said, turning away from the window. "Brenda’s attorney will claim the boy is exaggerating or that I coached him during the drive to the hotel. They will try to spin this as a standard parental disagreement over discipline."
David, the former federal investigator, leaned back in his chair, a sharp, knowing smile breaking across his weathered face. "That brings us to the second phase of our strategy, Arthur. During my preliminary check of your Silver Pines property registry this morning, I pulled up the architectural electrical schematics you filed when you built the estate five years ago."
David slid a high-resolution tablet across the table toward me.
"When Brenda moved in two years ago, she complained that the interior smart-home security cameras you installed in the kitchen and hallways were 'invasive to her privacy,'" David explained. "You told her you disconnected the interior feeds to make her comfortable. But according to your structural wiring diagrams, the exterior security loop—specifically the high-definition, infrared 4K cameras covering the rear stone patio, the gardens, and the detached greenhouse—operate on a completely independent, hardwired power over ethernet relay connected to an encrypted cloud server in your basement vault."
My eyes widened as the realization hit me. I had completely forgotten about the exterior security loop. I had installed it during the initial construction to monitor the perimeter of the ten-acre forest property against trespassers and wildlife.

"Are those cameras still recording?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave.
"They record on a continuous thirty-day rolling cloud archive," David said, tapping the tablet screen to open a remote server portal. "I utilized your master administrative credentials to access the cloud backup an hour ago. Arthur... we don't just have Leo’s statement. We have seventy-two hours of unedited, high-definition audiovisual footage of exactly what happened outside that house while you were in Seattle."
