Chapter 10 - Tyler’s Car Impoundment

While his mother and grandmother were experiencing their public humiliation at the country club, seventeen-year-old Tyler Montgomery was executing his own arrogant routine at Silver Pines High School—an elite public high school where he had spent the last six months playing the role of the wealthy, untouchable big man on campus, fueled entirely by the 2024 Range Rover Sport I had leased for him.
At 2:45 PM, fifteen minutes before the final dismissal bell, Tyler was sitting on the hood of the glistening white Range Rover in the senior parking lot, surrounded by three of his varsity lacrosse teammates and two cheerleaders he had been trying to impress all semester. The vehicle’s premium sound system was blasting hip-hop across the asphalt, the doors wide open to display the custom leather interior.
“Yeah, my stepdad’s firm leases it for me, but it’s basically mine,” Tyler was boasting loudly to the cheerleaders, tossing the heavy key fob in the air and catching it. “We’re taking it up to Mount Hood this weekend for a ski trip. I’ve got the master credit card for gas and cabin rentals, so everything’s covered.”
The sound of a heavy diesel engine approaching drew the attention of the students in the parking lot. Turning into the senior loop was a massive, commercial flatbed tow truck bearing the logo of Portland Commercial Fleet Recovery, flanked by a marked Silver Pines Police Department patrol cruiser.
The tow truck pulled directly into the spaces across from Tyler’s Range Rover, blocking it in. The driver jumped out of the cab wearing a high-visibility vest, accompanied by a uniformed police officer and the school’s Vice Principal, Mr. Davies.
Tyler slid off the hood of the car, frowning in aggressive annoyance as he walked toward the tow truck driver. “Hey! What are you doing blocking my space, man? Move that rig, we’re about to pull out.”
The tow truck driver ignored him completely, walking to the front bumper of the Range Rover and dropping his heavy steel winch hook onto the asphalt.
“Tyler Montgomery?” Vice Principal Davies asked, stepping between the teenager and the tow truck driver with a severe, unsmiling expression.
“Yeah? Why are the police here, Mr. Davies?” Tyler asked, his bravado faltering slightly as his lacrosse teammates stopped laughing and stepped back.
“This vehicle is the lawful property of Vance Architectural Engineering,” the police officer stated clearly, resting his hand on his duty belt as he looked at the teenager. “We are here assisting commercial fleet recovery in the repossession of corporate asset #409, pursuant to a formal revocation of driver authorization issued by the primary leaseholder, Mr. Arthur Vance, at ten o'clock this morning.”
“Repossession?!” Tyler shrieked, his face turning bright red as a crowd of thirty students began gathering around the parking lot to watch the spectacle, several of them pulling out their smartphones to record the scene. “You can't take my car! That’s my vehicle! My mom gave it to me! I have the keys right here!”
“You have a key fob to a commercial corporate vehicle that you are no longer insured or authorized to operate, young man,” the police officer replied coldly, holding out an open palm. “Hand over the electronic key fob immediately. If you attempt to enter the vehicle or interfere with the recovery operator, you will be placed under arrest for obstruction and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.”
“This is bullshit! I’m calling my mom!” Tyler screamed, pulling out his iPhone with trembling hands while the cheerleaders he had been boasting to moments earlier began whispering and laughing behind their hands.
May you like
“You can call whoever you want from the bus stop, Mr. Montgomery,” Vice Principal Davies said dryly, taking the key fob from Tyler’s shaking fingers and handing it to the tow truck driver. “In the meantime, retrieve your personal backpack from the cabin. This vehicle is leaving campus immediately.”
In front of dozens of recording smartphones and staring peers, Tyler was forced to reach into the back seat of the Range Rover, grab his gym bag, and stand humiliated on the asphalt while the hydraulic winch dragged his status symbol up onto the flatbed trailer. As the tow truck pulled out of the school gates with his luxury ride strapped down with steel chains, Tyler was left standing alone in the rain, stripped of his swagger, facing a three-mile walk home in the mud.
