Chapter 2

PART 2: THE KANE ESTATE

The helicopter landed just before dawn.

Sophia had never seen a place like the Kane Estate.

Calling it a mansion would have been an insult.

It was a fortress.

Hidden deep within the mountains, surrounded by dense forests and private security checkpoints, the estate stretched across hundreds of acres. Stone walls rose from the cliffs like something built centuries ago, despite containing some of the most advanced security systems in the world.

As the helicopter touched down, Sophia held Emma tighter.

The baby had slept through most of the flight.

Alexander stepped out first.

The cold mountain air immediately swept through the landing pad.

Two dozen armed security personnel were already waiting.

Sophia noticed something unsettling.

They weren't protecting Alexander.

They were protecting Emma.

Every guard's eyes followed the infant.

Every single one.

The realization sent a chill down her spine.

"What exactly is going on?" she asked.

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he helped her down from the helicopter.

The gesture was familiar.

Painfully familiar.

Months ago, that simple touch would have made her heart race.

Now it only confused her.

"Alexander."

He finally looked at her.

His expression remained unreadable.

"I'll explain everything."

"When?"

A pause.

"When I know you're safe."

Sophia laughed bitterly.

"That's not an answer."

"No."

His eyes drifted toward the surrounding forest.

"It's the only one I can give right now."

The inside of the estate was even more intimidating.

Massive hallways.

Marble floors.

Ancient paintings.

Generations of Kane family portraits stared down from the walls.

Power seemed embedded into every stone.

Sophia followed Alexander through corridor after corridor.

Eventually they stopped in front of a private suite larger than her entire apartment.

A nurse waited inside.

Along with a pediatric doctor.

And two female security officers.

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

"You've assigned guards to a newborn?"

Alexander remained silent.

The doctor spoke first.

"Miss Bennett, we're simply being cautious."

Sophia wasn't convinced.

Nothing about this felt normal.

Nothing.

Three hours later, Emma was asleep.

Sophia sat beside the crib watching her.

The sunrise painted soft golden light across the room.

For the first time in days, there was silence.

Then came a knock.

The door opened.

An older woman entered.

Elegant.

Graceful.

Terrifying.

Sophia immediately recognized her from countless magazine covers.

Evelyn Kane.

Alexander's mother.

The woman often referred to as the most powerful person in the family.

Some people even claimed she was more dangerous than her son.

Evelyn closed the door behind her.

Neither woman spoke for several seconds.

Then Evelyn approached the crib.

Her expression remained calm.

Controlled.

The same expression Alexander wore.

Now Sophia understood where he inherited it.

"You named her Emma?" Evelyn asked quietly.

Sophia nodded.

"Yes."

Evelyn looked down at the sleeping infant.

For a brief moment, something softened in her eyes.

Then it vanished.

"Beautiful name."

Sophia wasn't sure how to respond.

The older woman reached toward the blanket.

Instinctively, Sophia tensed.

Evelyn noticed.

"I won't hurt her."

"You understand why I'm cautious."

A faint smile appeared.

"Actually, I do."

Evelyn gently moved the blanket.

The baby's tiny wrist became visible.

The crescent-shaped birthmark immediately appeared.

Everything changed.

Sophia watched the color drain from Evelyn's face.

The older woman's hand froze.

Her eyes widened.

Not with surprise.

With fear.

Pure fear.

The room suddenly felt colder.

"What is it?" Sophia demanded.

Evelyn didn't answer.

She couldn't.

For several seconds she simply stared.

Then she whispered something under her breath.

A prayer.

Sophia was certain it was a prayer.

"What does it mean?"

Evelyn slowly straightened.

Her composure returned.

But not completely.

Not enough to hide what Sophia had just witnessed.

"How much has Alexander told you?"

"Nothing."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

As if expecting that answer.

"Of course."

"What is happening?"

The older woman walked toward the window.

Outside, morning fog rolled across the mountains.

Finally she spoke.

"Fifty years ago, a child was born into this family."

Sophia remained silent.

"He had the same birthmark."

A knot formed in Sophia's stomach.

"What happened to him?"

Evelyn stared into the distance.

"He died."

Sophia swallowed.

"An illness?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Cold.

Sharp.

"He was murdered."

The room fell silent.

Sophia's pulse accelerated.

"What?"

Evelyn continued.

"Before him there were others."

"Others?"

"The same mark. The same bloodline."

Sophia felt her hands trembling.

"And they all died?"

Evelyn looked at her.

"Every single one."

The words hit like a physical blow.

Sophia immediately moved toward the crib.

Protectively.

Desperately.

"No."

Evelyn's expression darkened.

"I said they died."

She looked down at Emma.

"But your daughter survived."

"Why?"

For the first time, uncertainty appeared in Evelyn's eyes.

"I don't know."

A knock interrupted them.

The door opened.

Alexander entered.

One glance at his mother told him exactly what had happened.

"You showed her?"

Evelyn nodded.

Alexander cursed under his breath.

Sophia stood.

"Enough."

Both of them looked at her.

"No more secrets."

Alexander sighed heavily.

"Sophia—"

"No."

Her voice cracked.

Not from fear.

From exhaustion.

"You kidnapped me. You brought me here. Armed guards follow my daughter everywhere."

Tears filled her eyes.

"You owe me the truth."

The room became silent.

Alexander and Evelyn exchanged a look.

A silent conversation.

One that clearly carried years of history.

Finally Alexander nodded.

"Okay."

Sophia waited.

His jaw tightened.

Then suddenly—

The lights went out.

Every light in the room.

Darkness swallowed the estate.

A second later alarms exploded throughout the building.

Red emergency lights flooded the hallway.

Security sirens screamed.

Sophia jumped.

Emma immediately began crying.

The sound echoed through the room.

Alexander's face changed instantly.

From businessman.

To soldier.

His hand moved beneath his jacket.

A pistol appeared.

Evelyn looked genuinely alarmed.

"What happened?"

A voice crackled through Alexander's earpiece.

The blood drained from his face.

"Sir, we've been breached."

Sophia froze.

Breached?

The estate?

That was impossible.

Wasn't it?

Gunshots suddenly echoed somewhere below.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then dozens.

Rapid.

Violent.

Getting closer.

Emma cried harder.

Alexander moved toward the crib.

Fast.

Protective.

Instinctive.

Without thinking, he picked up his daughter.

For the first time.

Sophia stared.

So did he.

For a brief second the chaos disappeared.

Alexander looked down at Emma.

The tiny baby stared back through tear-filled eyes.

His entire expression softened.

A father meeting his daughter.

A moment that should have happened weeks ago.

Then another gunshot shattered the silence.

Reality returned.

Alexander looked toward the door.

His voice became ice.

"Someone came for her."

Sophia's heart stopped.

"For Emma?"

Alexander nodded.

A security officer burst into the room.

Blood covered his sleeve.

"They're heading this way!"

"How many?"

"We don't know."

Alexander handed Emma back to Sophia.

Then he loaded a fresh magazine into his pistol.

The metallic click echoed through the room.

"What do they want?" Sophia whispered.

Alexander looked directly at her.

The answer terrified him.

She could see it.

"They don't want money."

Another gunshot echoed.

Closer now.

"They don't want me."

The hallway outside erupted into shouting.

Security teams running.

Weapons drawn.

A war unfolding inside the estate.

Alexander's blue eyes locked onto Emma.

For the first time, Sophia saw genuine fear.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for his daughter.

May you like

And then he said the words that changed everything.

"They came because they know she's alive."
