Chapter 1

PART 1:

"“She thought running away would save her daughter… but it only led her straight into a war she never knew existed.”
PART 1: THE FLIGHT

The private jet sliced through the night sky at forty thousand feet.

Outside the windows, nothing existed except darkness and scattered stars. Inside, however, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Sophia Bennett sat alone in the cream leather seat near the rear of the cabin, her newborn daughter sleeping peacefully in her arms.

The contrast felt cruel.

The baby slept as if the world were safe.

Sophia knew it wasn't.

Not anymore.

Three days ago, she had given birth.

Two days ago, she had disappeared from the hospital.

And for the last forty-eight hours, she had been running.

Running from questions.

Running from powerful people.

Running from a truth that could destroy more than one family.

Her daughter shifted slightly against her chest.

Sophia immediately tightened her hold.

""It's okay, Emma,"" she whispered.

The tiny infant responded with a sleepy sigh.

For a moment, Sophia allowed herself to pretend.

Pretend they were just another mother and daughter traveling somewhere peaceful.

Pretend nobody was hunting them.

Pretend the father of her child wasn't one of the most powerful men in the world.

Then the cabin door opened.

The sound alone sent a chill down her spine.

Three men entered.

Two remained near the doorway.

The third walked forward.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like a man who never had to ask permission.

Alexander Kane.

The billionaire heir.

CEO.

Media icon.

Financial genius.

And the man who had shattered her heart eight months ago.

Sophia's breathing stopped.

She hadn't seen him since the night he disappeared.

The night he promised he would return.

The night he lied.

Alexander looked exactly the same.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Dark tailored suit worth more than most people's yearly salary.

Sharp jawline.

Cold blue eyes.

Yet something was different.

He looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

As though he hadn't slept in days.

For several seconds neither of them spoke.

The engines hummed softly around them.

Finally Alexander broke the silence.

""You're difficult to find.""

His voice remained calm.

Controlled.

Dangerously calm.

Sophia laughed bitterly.

""That's kind of the point.""

His gaze dropped.

Toward the baby.

The moment his eyes landed on the child, something changed.

His entire body seemed to freeze.

Sophia instinctively pulled Emma closer.

Alexander noticed.

The hurt that flashed across his face lasted less than a second.

Then it disappeared.

Replaced by the familiar mask of authority.

""You shouldn't have run.""

Sophia stared at him.

""You shouldn't have left.""

Another silence.

This one felt heavier.

Alexander glanced away first.

A tiny crack in his armor.

""You don't understand what happened.""

""Then explain it.""

His jaw tightened.

Sophia almost laughed.

Months ago she would have begged for answers.

Now she was too exhausted.

Too angry.

Too disappointed.

Alexander took another step forward.

The bodyguards remained motionless behind him.

Watching.

Waiting.

Protecting.

But protecting whom?

Alexander?

Or the child?

Sophia couldn't tell.

""What do you want?"" she asked.

His eyes returned to Emma.

The baby slept through everything.

Completely unaware that two lives were colliding above her.

""I need to see her.""

""No.""

Alexander inhaled slowly.

The muscles in his jaw flexed.

Still he kept his voice low.

""I'm not here to hurt her.""

""You expect me to believe that?""

His expression hardened.

""Sophia.""

""No.""

The answer came instantly.

Fiercely.

Maternal instinct overwhelming fear.

For the first time since entering the cabin, Alexander looked genuinely affected.

Not angry.

Not frustrated.

Hurt.

As if her refusal wounded him more than she realized.

Then Emma moved.

A tiny hand escaped from beneath the blanket.

Alexander's eyes followed the motion automatically.

His expression changed immediately.

Complete shock.

Sophia noticed.

""What?""

Alexander didn't answer.

His gaze remained fixed on the baby's wrist.

The color drained from his face.

""No...""

The word barely escaped his lips.

Sophia looked down.

A small birthmark.

A crescent moon shape.

Nothing unusual.

At least that was what she had always assumed.

Alexander suddenly knelt beside her seat.

The movement startled even his own bodyguards.

His eyes never left the mark.

Impossible.

Disbelief.

Fear.

Recognition.

Every emotion crossed his face within seconds.

Sophia's pulse accelerated.

""What is it?""

Still no answer.

Alexander reached out.

Carefully.

Slowly.

As though approaching something sacred.

Sophia nearly pulled away.

But stopped.

His fingers hovered over Emma's wrist.

Not touching.

Simply staring.

Like a man confronting a ghost.

Finally he whispered something.

A name.

""Michael...""

Sophia frowned.

""Who?""

Alexander looked up.

His blue eyes appeared darker now.

Haunted.

""Nobody.""

""Alexander.""

He stood abruptly.

The distance returned between them.

The billionaire mask slipped back into place.

But it was too late.

Sophia had seen the truth.

Something about Emma terrified him.

And that frightened her more than anything.

The bodyguard nearest the door stepped forward.

""Sir.""

Alexander raised a hand.

Silencing him immediately.

Then he looked at Sophia.

Not at the woman he once loved.

Not at the mother of his child.

At someone standing on the edge of a disaster she couldn't yet see.

""We're changing course.""

Sophia's stomach dropped.

""What?""

""The plane isn't going where you think.""

Fear exploded through her chest.

""You can't do this.""

""I already have.""

""You don't own me.""

His eyes softened for a brief moment.

""No.""

His gaze moved to Emma.

""But someone is trying to own her.""

Sophia felt the blood leave her face.

The cabin suddenly felt colder.

Smaller.

More dangerous.

""What are you talking about?""

Alexander hesitated.

For the first time in years, the great Alexander Kane looked uncertain.

Then he delivered the sentence that changed everything.

""Your daughter isn't in danger because she's mine.""

Sophia stared.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Alexander's expression became grim.

""She's in danger because of who she is.""

May you like

The jet continued flying into the darkness.

And somewhere far below, people were already searching for the child.
