Chapter 3 - The Severed Ties

The digital clock on the emergency room wall read 8:45 PM when Arthur’s cell phone began to vibrate in his breast pocket for the twelfth time in an hour. The screen displayed the name Richard Hayes — Managing Partner. Until tonight, seeing that name would have caused Arthur’s pulse to accelerate with professional anxiety. Tonight, he stared at the glowing pixels with absolute detachment before pressing the green answer button.

“Arthur! Where the hell are you?” Richard’s voice exploded through the earpiece, loud enough that a passing orderly turned his head. “Do you have any idea what happened in that boardroom after you sprinted out like a madman? Victor Vance walked out. He took his legal team, he took his four-hundred-million-dollar merger, and he walked right out the front doors of our building!”

“My daughter called me, Richard,” Arthur said, his tone eerily level as he watched Lily fall asleep on a pile of hospital blankets he had arranged on three waiting room chairs. “Her mother collapsed. She was bleeding on the floor.”

“We all have families, Arthur!” Richard shouted, the background noise of a bustling downtown restaurant echoing behind him. “We all make sacrifices! I missed my own son’s college graduation to close the Pfizer account, and you know it! You don’t abandon a client like Victor Vance five minutes before signing! You call an ambulance, you send a personal assistant to handle the hospital logistics, and you finish the job!”

Arthur walked toward the glass windows overlooking the hospital courtyard, watching the rain streak down the panes. “Send an assistant? My eight-year-old child was alone in an apartment with her mother’s blood on her hands, thinking she was about to become an orphan, and you wanted me to send an intern with a company credit card?”

“You just committed career suicide, Sterling,” Richard snarled, his voice dropping into a venomous, legalistic register. “The executive committee convened an emergency vote twenty minutes ago. Your partnership nomination has been formally rescinded. Furthermore, because your unauthorized departure directly caused the collapse of a retainer agreement worth three million dollars in billable hours, the firm is terminating your employment contract effective immediately under the gross negligence clause. You’re out, Arthur. Clear your desk by noon tomorrow or I’ll have security dump your files in the alley.”

“Save your security guards the trouble,” Arthur said quietly. “You can keep the files, Richard. You can keep the corner office, the mahogany desk, and the country club membership. I’m done.”

He didn’t wait for a response. He pulled the phone away from his ear, tapped the screen to end the call, and then systematically went into the settings menu, deleting his corporate email account, clearing his work calendar, and turning off the device entirely. For the first time in ten years, he was completely disconnected from the grid.
