Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

The press conference finally ended after an exhausting hour of endless questions.

Arthur walked Lily back inside the quiet mansion, noticing how her small eyes were drooping with exhaustion.

"You did remarkably well out there, my dear," Arthur praised her, patting her shoulder.

"Why don't you go up to your room and rest until dinner is ready?"

Lily nodded sleepily, rubbing her eyes as she walked toward the grand sweeping staircase.

Arthur watched her go, a warm smile on his face, before turning to head toward his private study.

He had a highly important phone call to make to the city's police commissioner regarding Eleanor's arrest warrants.

Lily slowly climbed the marble stairs, admiring the massive oil paintings hanging on the walls.

She finally reached her bedroom door, turning the heavy brass knob and pushing it open.

The room was surprisingly dark, as the heavy velvet curtains had been drawn shut.

Lily walked toward her large bed, wanting nothing more than to curl up under the warm blankets.

Suddenly, a heavy, gloved hand clamped violently over her small mouth.

Lily screamed against the rough leather, but the sound was completely muffled.

Marcus dragged her backward, his massive arm wrapping tightly around her chest like a steel band.

"Don't make a sound, little rat," Marcus hissed directly into her ear.

"You have caused my boss a lot of extremely expensive problems."

Lily kicked her legs wildly, her tiny shoes hitting his shins, but he was far too strong.

He pulled out the deadly syringe with his free hand, using his teeth to rip the plastic cap off.

"This will only pinch for a second," Marcus whispered cruelly, bringing the needle closer to her arm.

Suddenly, Lily remembered the painful lessons she had learned surviving on the rough city streets.

She went completely limp, dropping all of her dead weight toward the floor in an instant.

The sudden move caught Marcus completely off guard, and his grip slipped for a fraction of a second.

Lily instantly brought her foot up and stomped down on his toes with all the strength she possessed.

Marcus grunted in pain, his hand loosening from her mouth just enough.

Lily ripped her head away and let out a bloodcurdling, top-of-her-lungs scream.

"GRANDPA! HELP ME!" she shrieked, the sound echoing loudly through the silent hallways.

Marcus cursed aggressively and lunged forward to grab her again.

But before he could even touch her, the heavy bedroom door was violently kicked open.

Arthur stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, holding a massive antique silver candlestick he had grabbed from the hall.

For an old man, he moved with the terrifying speed of a protective lion.

"Get your filthy hands off my granddaughter!" Arthur roared with absolute fury.

He swung the heavy silver candlestick with all his might, striking Marcus squarely on the side of his head.

Marcus collapsed onto the floor with a heavy thud, dropping the deadly syringe instantly.

Lily ran crying into Arthur's arms, burying her terrified face into his expensive suit.

Arthur held her tightly, pulling a small silver whistle from his pocket and blowing it loudly.

Within seconds, six heavily armed security guards rushed into the room, pinning the unconscious Marcus to the floor.

"Tie him up and call the police immediately," Arthur ordered, his voice trembling with leftover adrenaline.

He looked down at the syringe on the floor and felt a cold shiver run down his spine.

Eleanor had tried to murder his precious granddaughter in his own house.

The gloves were completely off, and Arthur was going to burn Eleanor's entire world to the ground.
