Chapter 4 - The Shattered Illusion

"No," Elena whispered, shaking her head. The room began to spin. "No, Julian loved my father. He organized the funeral. He paid for the memorial."
"He bought his own absolution," Gabriel said, his voice completely devoid of pity, offering only cold, hard truth. "I have the wiretap recordings, Elena. I have the bank transfers. I didn't come to your penthouse just for the money Julian owed me. I came to dismantle him because his careless murder of a District Attorney brought the FBI to my doorstep."
Elena covered her face with her hands. A sob tore from her throat, aggravating her broken ribs, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the agony in her soul. The man she had married, the man she had sought comfort from in her darkest hour, was the architect of her nightmare.
Gabriel didn't try to touch her. He sat perfectly still, allowing her to process the devastation.
"I slept next to him," Elena choked out, tears streaming down her bruised face. "For three years, I slept next to the man who murdered my father."
"You were manipulated by a sociopath. Do not carry his sins on your conscience," Gabriel said. He stood up, walking toward the door. "Rest today. Tomorrow, if you are strong enough, we will discuss how to burn his empire to the ground."
Elena looked up, her tear-filled eyes locking onto Gabriel’s. The paralyzing fear that had defined her marriage was suddenly gone, entirely consumed by a blinding, terrifying wrath.

"I want to see the files," she demanded, her voice shaking but resolute. "I want to see the proof."
Gabriel nodded slowly. "Tomorrow. Drink your tea, Elena. You will need your strength for what comes next."
