Chapter 16 - The Masterpiece

Six months later.
The gallery in Florence, Italy, was warm and bathed in golden afternoon sunlight. Elena stood in front of a beautifully restored Renaissance canvas, applying a delicate layer of varnish. The bruising had faded long ago, leaving behind a woman who was vibrant, strong, and entirely free.
The scandal in New York had been monumental. Julian Vance was convicted on federal charges of money laundering, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder. Without his wealth, he was thrown into a maximum-security prison, exactly as Elena had wished.
A heavy, familiar footstep echoed on the hardwood floor behind her.
Elena didn't turn around, a smile automatically touching her lips. "You are blocking the natural light."
Gabriel Thorne stepped up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He pressed a soft kiss to her neck. "I apologize. I was distracted by the artist."
Gabriel had dismantled his New York syndicate, leaving the violent life behind. With Julian’s empire dissolved and the cartel severely crippled by the FBI’s investigations, Gabriel had taken his immense wealth and vanished across the Atlantic with Elena.
"Is it finished?" Gabriel asked, looking at the painting.
"Almost," Elena murmured, leaning into his warmth. "It just needed time. You can't rush a restoration. You have to let the canvas breathe before it can be beautiful again."
Gabriel turned her around, looking deep into her eyes. There were no ghosts left in them. No shadows of fear. Only love, fierce and unyielding.

"You are the greatest masterpiece I have ever seen," Gabriel whispered, cupping her face in his hands.
Elena smiled, pulling him down for a deep, passionate kiss. The nightmare was a lifetime away. She had survived the dark, and now, she was finally living in the light.
