Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Winter turned into spring. The toxic residue of Julian and Sarah finally washed out of my life, leaving behind a clean, bright space that I quickly filled with things that mattered.
I poured myself into my work at the hospital. Without the crushing weight of a manipulative marriage and fake infertility hanging over me, I thrived. I spearheaded a new trauma triage protocol that reduced patient wait times by twenty percent. I published two peer-reviewed papers.
And, I started dating Grant Sterling.
It started with coffee in the cafeteria, evolved into dinners at quiet Italian restaurants, and blossomed into the most secure, passionate, and respectful relationship I had ever known. Grant didn't view my ambition as a threat. He celebrated it. When I was called in for emergency surgeries, he didn't complain; he packed me a thermos of hot soup and kissed my forehead.
One evening, as we were cooking dinner together in my kitchen, Grant wrapped his arms around my waist from behind and rested his chin on my shoulder.
“The board met today,” he murmured, kissing my neck.
“Oh?” I asked, chopping vegetables. “And what did the board discuss?”
“Dr. Aris is retiring next month. They are looking for a new Chief of Medicine.” Grant paused, turning me around to face him. “Your name is at the absolute top of the list, Elena.”
I dropped the knife, my heart soaring. Chief of Medicine. It was everything I had worked for, everything Julian had told me I was too "obsessed" with.

“Do you think I’m ready?” I asked.
Grant smiled, his hazel eyes entirely different from the ones that had destroyed Julian’s life. His were full of warmth and absolute certainty. “I think the hospital isn’t ready for how incredible you’re going to be.”
