Chapter 10 - The Triumphant Light

I stepped onto the elevator and pressed the button for the executive floor.
The doors slid shut, cutting off the view of Julian forever. I took a deep breath, feeling the gentle, fluttery kick of my daughter against my ribs. I placed a hand over my stomach and smiled.
When I reached my office, Grant was sitting on the leather sofa, reviewing a pediatric chart. He looked up and his face lit up with that same, unwavering adoration he gave me every single day.
“Good morning, Chief,” he smiled, standing up to kiss my cheek. “How are my two favorite girls today?”
“We are perfect,” I said, walking over to the massive floor-to-ceiling window behind my desk.
I looked out over the city skyline. The sun was breaking through the morning clouds, casting a brilliant, golden light over everything.
For seven years, I had believed I was broken, standing in the shadow of a man who needed me to be small so he could feel tall. But the truth always has a way of coming into the light. Biology doesn't lie. Records don't lie. And eventually, karma doesn't miss.
