Chapter 3 - The Truth Revealed

I opened the door to the penthouse suite.

Elise was sitting on the edge of the massive four-poster bed, wrapped tightly in the plush white hotel robe. She was shaking, her eyes wide, staring at the flashing police lights reflecting against the floor-to-ceiling windows.

When she saw me, she stood up.

“Liam… what is happening?” she whispered. “My phone is blowing up. My cousins are saying the FBI just raided the wedding and arrested Arthur. Did you do this?”

I walked over to her, taking her cold hands in mine.

“I did,” I said softly.

“But… how?” Elise asked, tears welling in her eyes. “You do taxes for small businesses. You’re… you’re just Liam.”

I sighed, sitting her down on the edge of the bed and sitting beside her.

“When we met at that coffee shop two years ago, I had just left a very dark world, Elise. I spent a decade hunting down cartel financiers, corrupt politicians, and human traffickers for federal intelligence. I saw the worst of humanity every single day. I left because I wanted peace. I wanted a normal life. I wanted you.”

I reached up and gently brushed a tear from her cheek.

“But when I saw those marks on your back… the peace treaty was broken. Nobody touches my wife and gets to keep their freedom.”

Elise stared at me, processing the magnitude of what I was saying. The quiet, boring man she thought she had married was actually a federal predator.

For a second, I was terrified she would be afraid of me. That she would pull away.

Instead, Elise threw her arms around my neck and buried her face in my chest, sobbing. But they weren't tears of fear. They were tears of pure, unadulterated relief. For the first time in ten years, she didn't have to carry the weight of her monster alone.

“He’s really gone?” she choked out.

“He is never coming back, Elise. I promise you.”
