Chapter 1 - The Midnight Raid

The reception band was playing a slow jazz rendition of “At Last.”

Arthur Vance took a slow sip of his expensive scotch, his eyes scanning the ballroom like a medieval king surveying his peasants. He had spent his entire life making people small, and tonight, he believed he had finally cemented his control over Elise forever. By marrying me—the quiet, unassuming tax accountant who barely spoke above a whisper at family dinners—he thought she had chosen a weak protector. A man he could easily bulldoze.

He was still smiling that cold, arrogant smile when the front doors of the country club shattered the elegant atmosphere.

It didn't happen like in the movies, with sirens blaring from a mile away. It was a silent, lethal breach.

Twenty federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers flooded the grand foyer. They moved with terrifying, synchronized precision. The jazz band abruptly stopped playing. The lead singer dropped his microphone, the feedback whining sharply through the speakers.

Guests gasped, parting like the Red Sea as the FBI agents marched directly onto the dance floor.

Arthur’s smile finally faltered. He lowered his scotch glass, his brow furrowing in confusion. Beside him, Elise’s aunt, Helen, let out a high-pitched squeak of indignation.

“Excuse me!” Helen shouted, stepping forward in her emerald silk dress. “This is a private, $100,000 wedding reception! Who is in charge here?”

A woman in a sharp navy suit stepped through the perimeter of agents. It was Sarah. My old director at the bureau. She looked exactly as she had five years ago: completely devoid of mercy.

“Arthur Vance?” Sarah’s voice carried across the dead-silent ballroom.

Arthur puffed out his chest, attempting to project authority. “I am Arthur Vance. And whoever authorized this ridiculous stunt is going to be looking for a new job by tomorrow morning. Do you have any idea who my lawyers are?”

“I do,” Sarah said, holding up a thick stack of warrants. “And their phones are currently being confiscated as well. Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for federal extortion, wire fraud, international money laundering, and witness intimidation.”

Arthur went pale. For the first time in his miserable life, the realization dawned on him that he wasn't the smartest man in the room.

“This is a mistake,” Arthur stammered, his eyes darting around the room, finally landing on me standing on the grand staircase. He pointed a shaking finger at me. “He did this! The little accountant! This is a misunderstanding over some tax paperwork!”

Two agents grabbed his arms, spinning him around and slamming the steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a heavy click.

I walked slowly down the stairs, straightening my cuffs. I stopped a few inches from his face.

“I told you I finally saw the whole picture, Arthur,” I whispered, my voice dropping its mild-mannered disguise. “Have a nice honeymoon in federal lockup. Don't forget what I do to people who cross my wife.”
