Chapter 7 - The Standoff

Beatrice laughed, a harsh, jagged sound that bordered on completely unhinged hysteria.
"You think I care about going to prison, Richard?" she spat, stepping closer until the barrel of the gun was only a few feet from my chest.
"My entire life has been a prison, watching you and Clara flaunt your perfect, unearned happiness while I scraped by."
"I don't care if they arrest me, as long as I get to watch you lose everything you love right before they put me in cuffs."
She raised the gun higher, aiming it away from my chest and pointing it downward toward the open hatch where my children were hiding.
A wave of pure, absolute terror crashed over me, freezing the blood in my veins.
"No!" I shouted, lunging forward to grab the barrel of the weapon.
"Don't you dare look at them, this is strictly between you and me!"
Beatrice stepped back, keeping the weapon perfectly leveled at the opening in the floor.
"Clara took my father, she took my inheritance, and now I am going to take her legacy," Beatrice whispered, her finger tightening on the trigger.
I closed my eyes, preparing to throw my body over the opening to take the bullet meant for my little boys.
I braced for the deafening gunshot, praying that my body mass would be enough to stop the hollow-point round.
But the gunshot never came.
Instead, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the entire west wing of the house, shaking the floorboards beneath my feet.
The reinforced glass of the kitchen windows completely shattered inward, raining a thousand glittering shards across the tile floor.
Beatrice shrieked in surprise, dropping the flashlight as she instinctively covered her face from the flying debris.
A series of incredibly bright, blinding tactical lights cut through the darkness, illuminating the kitchen with the intensity of the midday sun.
Red laser sights danced across the walls, the cabinets, and finally came to rest squarely on Beatrice's chest and forehead.
"Austin Police Department, drop the weapon right now!" a deep, heavily amplified voice boomed through the shattered window frames.
Dozens of heavily armed SWAT officers were pouring through the broken windows, their assault rifles raised and ready to fire.
They had breached the perimeter, tearing down the steel shutters from the outside with heavy hydraulic equipment.
May you like
Beatrice stood completely frozen, staring blindly into the wall of tactical lights, her hand still trembling around the grip of the pistol.
"I said drop the weapon, or we will open fire!" the commanding officer roared, the tension in the room reaching an absolute boiling point.
