Chapter 2 - The Confession

The heavy steel shutters hit the floor with a final, echoing thud that resonated deep within my bones.

"Daddy, it's dark," Leo whimpered, his tiny hands grabbing handfuls of my dress shirt and hiding his tear-streaked face against my chest.

"It's just a game, buddy," I lied, forcing my voice to remain steady and calm despite the absolute terror gripping my heart.

I picked them both up, one in each arm, ignoring the sharp burning sensation in my muscles and the heavy weight pulling me down.

I had to get them out of this exposed playroom and down to the reinforced panic room in the basement before Beatrice made her next move.

I stepped cautiously out of the playroom, peering into the red-lit hallway, where the emergency strobes pulsed like a failing heartbeat.

Every single door leading out of the children's wing, thick oak reinforced with steel cores, was electronically sealed shut.

I walked up to the main exit of the wing and quickly swiped my master keycard over the biometric scanner on the wall.

A harsh, grating buzz sounded, and the LED light on the scanner flashed a bright, unforgiving red.

"Access Denied," the automated voice chimed smoothly, echoing down the empty corridor like a cruel joke.

I swiped the card again, harder this time, completely unable to comprehend that my own security system was rejecting me.

"Access Denied," the cold, mechanical voice repeated, confirming my worst fears.

Beatrice had completely revoked my administrative privileges, stripping me of all control over the house I had built with my own hands.

I was trapped in my own home, locked securely in the very cage I had spent millions designing to keep the danger outside.

"You always were entirely too trusting, Richard."

The voice suddenly echoed from the high-definition intercom speakers embedded in the ceiling, making me jump.

I froze, instinctively pulling the boys behind my legs to shield their small bodies from whatever might come next.

"Beatrice," I growled, tilting my head back and glaring directly into the nearest security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling.

"Open these doors right now, or I swear to God you will spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a federal prison."

A soft, mocking laugh filtered through the intercom, lacking any of the professional warmth she had faked for the past two years.

"Prison?" she mused, her voice dripping with an arrogant confidence that made my stomach churn.

"You honestly think anyone is coming to help you, Richard?"

"Everyone in your corporate circle, everyone in the media, they all think you are a grieving, paranoid widower who finally snapped under the pressure."

"I've been carefully planting emails, forged medical records, and erratic behavioral reports for months, setting this all up perfectly."

"They show a man completely losing his mind, firing loyal staff, and slowly starving his own children because of a psychotic delusion."

My blood ran ice cold as the sheer brilliance and pure evil of her twisted plan finally became crystal clear to me.

"Why?" I demanded, desperate to keep her talking, hoping to buy myself a few extra seconds to look for a physical weakness in the heavy doors.

"Because Clara stole everything that rightfully belonged to me!" Beatrice screamed, her calm facade completely vanishing into raw, unhinged fury.

"My father was your perfect wife's father too, but you didn't know that, did you?"

"He kept me a dirty little secret, leaving me with absolutely nothing while Clara got the wealth, the high-society status, and eventually, you."

I stared at the camera in absolute horror, the puzzle pieces violently slamming into place in my mind.

Beatrice was Clara's half-sister, a woman fueled by decades of resentment, jealousy, and a burning desire for revenge.

"I watched her live the life that should have been mine, every single day," Beatrice spat, her breathing heavy through the speakers.

"When she died, I thought I would finally get my rightful share, that the universe was finally balancing the scales."

"But she left every last penny in an untouchable trust for those two miserable brats you're hiding behind."

"So, I decided to remove them from the equation, slowly, quietly, and entirely without suspicion."

I looked down at Julian and Leo, realizing how incredibly close they had come to dying right under my nose.

"You won't get away with this," I yelled back, my eyes frantically scanning the hallway for a heavy object, a fire extinguisher, anything to smash the glass.

"Oh, but I already have, Richard," she replied smoothly, the sinister calm returning to her tone.

"The only miscalculation in my flawless plan was that stupid, bleeding-heart maid, Maria."

"I fired her three months ago when I caught her sneaking unauthorized snacks to the boys, threatening to have her deported if she ever returned."

Maria.

The name clicked in my head immediately, bringing a sudden wave of clarity.

Maria was the woman from the woods, the quiet, hardworking housekeeper who had mysteriously quit without giving notice.

Beatrice hadn't just fired her; she had blackmailed and threatened her to keep her silent about the starvation.

May you like

But Maria had come back anyway, braving the dark woods, the armed guards, and the legal threats just to keep my sons alive.

She was the stranger risking everything for my family, while the monster lived right down the hall.
